Replaced Brake Pads Today...

So I did my first brake job on my truck today (at 90,000 miles). It was about time for the rears to be replaced but I went ahead and did all four. Man...the front pads had an amazing amount of life left on them but I still changed them out.

We struggled getting the 18MM bolts off on the rear and realized after getting them off that it looks like the factory put lock-tite on them. Do I need to re-apply this? The fronts were a breeze with tht T55.

I didn't touch the rotors - they seem fine. I did not bleed the system or really anything else - just pads!

Also, It would be a good idea to change the brake fluid on a 4 yr old truck with 90K. If you get something like a Motive Power Bleeder it's an easy 1 person job.

I checked the manual and fluid should be changed every two years. This is crucial if you want to avoid disasembly of calipers to inspect for pitting.

Because the brakes are so powerful and last so long I would say the most important maintenance would be to clean and lube the caliper pins and mating surface. Inspect and lube caliper bushings too.

I would like to see a picture of caliper pins and a partially disasembled caliper.

Again, these brakes are powerful and will last a very long time. Exceptions are for people who do haul heavy loads or are trailering with trailers that have defective or inoperable brakes.

I like to turn the rotors as well. That way the new pads can wear in and it seems to give a smoother peddle as well. On these trucks it is so easy to take the rotors off the extra cost is nothing.
