egr what is it and what is it for

Its an emissons thing, it takes some of the exhaust gasses and puts them back into the intake for some ridiculous reason

Adding exhaust gases back into the cylinder reduces the temperature of the burn because there is not much oxygen in the exhaust gases and it takes the place of induction air. It is precisely metered. This reduces engine ping and Nitrous Oxides emissions.

But having a clogged or bad EGR would cause it to ping, correct?

And now does one go about checking to see if it is bad?

sometimes it could be blocked with carbon. Theres a rubber baffle on it. When I changed mine IT wasnt moving very easy when I pushed on it. the new one moved like pushing a key on a keyboard!

LOL, I like you guys but from a professional's point of view this is funny stuff. We all have our own areas of expertise. EGR is a accromym for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. As stated it is a emmissions reduction system that recirculates engine exhaust gasses back into the intake tract. Since the oxegen has been burnt out of these gasses they are now inert and composed mostly of nitrogen. This does two things. First it artificially reduces displacement by occupying part of the charge with inert gas. So at the same charge pressure there's less air and fuel. This in turn slows combustion times and reduces peak combustion temperatures. High combustion temperatures produce Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) which is a heavy and stable smog producing molecule. (I wish it was Nitrous Oxide (N2O)) So by keeping the peak temperature down much less smog is produced. It does have to be precisely metered as to much will prevent proper or complete combustion and kill power. EGR is limited to part throttle light accelleration and cruise conditons. It is not activated during idle, or mid to full throttle conditions to prevent misfiring, weak operation, or stalling. Due to the fact that dilluted charges burn much slower than pure ones igniton timing is advanced during EGR operation to compensate for it. If you block your EGR system without reducing the igniton timing during supposed EGR operation you can easily overheat the chamber and induce detonation from the premature combustion peaking. To answer the original question you only need EGR compatible headers if your vehicle came with it and needs to retain all emmission controls to remain street legal. Otherwise it is just another thing to be dealt with and maintained. EGR equiped headers mean they have a flange to supply exhaust gasses to the factory EGR vavle. If set up properly EGR will not effect WOT power as it will be shut off. It can reduce mileage greatly if the engine is not tuned for it. It will reduce mileage in any case due to weaker combustion from any amount of charge. If EGR is removed and the engine is tuned properly it will get better mileage, though polluting more. If you can legally remove it and retune the engine control for it's abscence then the only reason to keep it would be to help the enviroment. For a hot rodder it is just another system to set up, tune around, and maintain. It boils down to what you have to do to remain legal. Cams with a lot of valve overlap produce their own "EGR" due to reversion and don't need as much help to pass the sniffer as a tight smog cam at part throttle.

Your right Haulin' 8.1, I often (inadvertently) call NOx Nitrous Oxide but like you said it is actually Oxides of Nitrogen.

    • This is NOT impact damage nor neglect. There were previous class action lawsuits because of such paint preparation st GM manufacturing plant. Not just the Cherry Red Color. This paint is applied in three processes to obtain the desired color.  The manufacturer will cover for 36 months or 36k miles only. That rust is actually corrosion because of the paint process failure. Corrosion is covered for 100,100 miles or a certain months. However their corrosion doesn't include this type. Go figure. Clearly manufacturer knew from previous paint issues. This started 3 weeks ago out of the blue.  
    • Is it time to put a piece of tape over the CEL? 
    • consider doing electrical testing?  I would guess some power or ground wire/connection has a problem.   alldata.com has wiring diagrams, connector pinouts and diagnostic procedures you can use to find where the problem is.
    • can you tell if the reader is actually trying to get codes, and the pcm is reporting none, or is your reader just silently failing because it's not communicating with the pcm?
    • Any joy with this truck seems to be short-lived.   The CEL for P0172 ("bank 1" too rich) is now "intermittent".   I'm not sure where to check, or re-check, and my energy to keep chasing problems with junk is wearing thin. The P0172 seems to set as I'm coming to a stop, completely off the throttle, when fully warm. At least, that's what it's done the 3? times it's set.   Everything appears normal on the scanner EXCEPT long term fuel trim. There's only one bank on this vehicle because it's an OBD 1.5 with only one upstream O2 sensor. At idle, it's around -16.4% and will dip to -18% occasionally at idle or off-throttle. LTFT approaches 0 when throttle is held at 2500rpm. Short term appears normal, much closer to zero all the time. The LTFT tells me the engine is running rich at idle but compensating at higher load. But, why?   The EVAP purge valve doesn't appear to be leaking/sucking fuel vapor continuously. Is it sticking just as I come to a stop and the engine is choking on fuel vapor and sets the P0172? But that doesn't explain the persistently negative LTFT. Disconnecting the purge valve doesn't seem to make any difference.   I suppose that leaves another dang issue with the fuel injector. A leaking fuel pressure regulator, a new leak in the spider, or a leaking fuel injector/poppet valve I didn't see, or a small crack in one of the spider legs.   The vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator doesn't have raw fuel in it. It doesn't even smell like fuel when it's pulled off, not until you suck air through it, then you can tell it leads to a fuel component. I'd consider that normal? Nothing is signaling this is a FPR issue from the outside, at least.   The oil smells like fuel but it's not building volume. I've noticed most oil in most engines smells like fuel to some degree so it's hard to say if the smell is an issue or not. Or if the engine just still smells like fuel because the crankcase was full of it a few hundred miles ago. But it's been changed twice since that original issue of the leaking fuel line dumping fuel into the intake.   Patience is running very thin. Every win seems to be accompanied by two steps backwards, or another issue that leads to removing at least the top half of the intake manifold. Enough! LOL
