I recently bought a 98 Z71 Found out it has a K&N filter. Can I remove the lid and run without it on until I can afford a cold air intake kit? Kinda looks like the cold air box when I remove the lid.

ahhhh........

 

When you remove the lid you are letting hot engine air in, which defeats the purpose of a CAI.

It's getting pretty cold up here in manitoba now would it work in the winter, or am I wasting my time?

A cold air intake in your area wont help gas mileage. Colder air will make the PCM add fuel to keep A/F at 14.7. The OEM has plenty of fresh air for a stocker.

I had a 97 isn't the stock system already CIA? Look in the airbox isn't air drawn in from the fender well. Taking the lid off allows warm engine air in and exposes the filter to lots of debris. Something the KN is not very good at removing to begin with.
