How to clean exhaust tips

Recommended Posts

I have a magnaflow catback dual exhaust on my 99 silverado.

The tips have like tar burnt on them and they have a haze on them i cant get to come off.

I have tried chrome cleaner but i need to do something more like soak them in something.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas.

thanks

try some "never-dull" metal polish. i have been using that stuff for 20+ years. it really works well. you can pick you up a can of it at wally world or just about any parts house.

Flitz is another good idea, only its kind of expensive. I haven't come across any type of metal that is hasnt polished right up. Even aluminum toolboxes that have been in the weather for years. Ace hardware carries it, as I'm sure most other hardware type places would. I use turtlewax's chrome polish on mine. I dont believe I have tar on mine though. Just the black/carbon. I would try to keep up with it once you get it clean, then it may not be so bad to get off.

'Never-Dull' has always worked for me on getting chrome clean and not harming the finish. It's in a black colored can at most Auto Parts Stores.

On my 6.5 Diesel I used 'Simple Green' to clean the tailpipe and tires. But it was not chrome tipped either and I don't know what Simple green would do to chrome either.

I should have mentioned that my tips are not chrome but polished stainless,I also polished my tailpipe from the muffler all the way back to the tips using sandpaper going from 1000 grit and working my way up to 2500 grit then using a Mothers Mini Powerball and Mothers extreme polish for the final step,It looks great and an SOS pad does not hurt the stainless,It will scratch chrome though.
