Dex-Cool Question

I, like everyone else of course, have Dex-Cool in my '04 4.8 Liter. I plan on changing it at 3 years or 75k. Right now I have just over 48k on the truck. I took the cap off the overflow tank the other day and noticed small amounts of crap (not any alarming amount, just a bit) floating around in the tank. Do you think I should switch it out earlier than 75k to prevent problems? I would think that if the stuff is advertised for 150,000 mi or 5 years that 3 years 75k would be still well within the safety zone. However, after looking into the tank I got a little bit scared. But then again, I have my transmission serviced every 25,000mi, so I'm obviously a little bit paranoid about things.

i did my 04 a few months ago. It seemed like it was about time. The fluid had some gunk in it and it had that acidic taste to it.... dont ask. The fluid looks alot better now. Plus, its better safe than sorry.

clm7214...don't drink the kool-aid.....err drink the Kool-Aid not the DexCool-aid...maybe they both kill kitties with horrific convulsions so don't drink either.

I accidently got some in my mouth while i was under the truck. You know how it is when your under your truck, things only fall in three places; in your mouth, eyes or ears. I didnt like put a straw in and suck her dry. Haha. Also, it was soo acidic the cats WOULDNT drink it. I watched them try.

Jeremey, I would go ahead and do it now and when you do, add a bottle of Lubegard 96001 Kool It. This product will eleminate all chemical Electrolysis and is a great product. It is recommended by Modine Radiator Co and we sell a ton of it and I personally use it in mine.

I had a problem with Dex-Cool at 80k in my last truck, a 2000 S-10. One day the heater was no longer blowing hot air. Turns out the heater core was clogged, but I was lucky and caught in time as a chemical flush cured the problem. If you don't catch it in time you may be stuck replacing the heater core.

I did some research and apparently this is a common problem, see these links:

I would not let Dex-Cool go to 100k as GM states based on my experience and research.

I flushed with dexcool at 75K and 150K and ended up replacing the water pump at 150K. The pump was not leaking yet but I figured I would change it out when I changed all the hoses since I didn't want to do it again when it failed. Everything still nice and clean at 180K+.

I believe the problems were with older designed cooling systems which allowed air to enter the system and start the gelling problem. I have not heard of many issues on the 99+ 5.3l

2000 5.3 WITH 144000KMS

coolant light comes on once a month, keeping it topped up, can smell coolant fumes when i stick my nose under hood after driving around town, can't find the leak anywhere, no leaks on ground. what it is the usual suspect? w/p, intake?

Water pump gasket. Can't be the intake, because 5.3L is a dry intake. Also check the fittings to the heater core. The fittings are plastic and can crack with age and coolant will drip down the hose to the top of the engine and burn off.

Good luck!
