Raced a Caddy on the Highway

It was about 20 minutes ago on the highway, I was leaving my buddies house and he was behind me in his moms mid 90's Cadillac Seville sts I think it is, with the Northstar V8. He drives an Acura Integra with the usuall go fast mods and is pretty into the whole racing scene.

But anyways I was infront of him before we got on the highway, and I was going probobly 30 in a 45, just to piss him off (he's always speeding) and he called me, saying I dont wanna mess with the caddy. Well I knew it had the Northstar, prolly putting out a good 300 hp, so I figured what the hell, lets race on the highway, since I was heading home and he was heading to his friends dorm to do a project, and my exit is 1 infront of his. So I get up next to him on the highway, and we were doing 65mph, and I did the old 3 honks and go on the 3rd honk. Well I wasnt thinking and mashed it on the 3rd honk, and he anticipated it. I got the jump anyways and lead until about 100mph, his front bumper probobly around my rear, then he started pulling on me slowly and my exit was coming up so I had to lay on the brakes. But yeah, the Caddy kept up, and was pulling me a little after 100. Its stock too. Them things move! I feel if I woulda mashed it half way between the 2nd and 3rd honk I woulda done a bit better, you know cause I would have been in 2nd and moving right at the 3rd honk, but I now have more respect for Caddys. :flag::cheers::eek:

All in all it was a good race, probobly more to come in the future because the alternator on his Integra took a big dump.

How does that work anyway?

Does it go "Honk, Honk, Honk, GO!"

Or is it "Honk, Honk, GO!"

???

I've had a couple of people do it next to me, but never in a place where I would dream of racing somebody (busy streets, lots of stoplights, traffic on highway, etc).

I just want to make sure that I don't get screwed by the next honky I decide to run.

I'm not hip to the street-racing lingo.

Those Northstars are no joke. I think they are starting to get outdated, but certainly were great engines of their time. a few buicks have been able to compete with my buddies wrx (not sti)...now thats hilarious

Excellent question!

That doesn't seem to have caught on up here, at least in Ottawa. Or at aleast I've never heard anyone do that. One of those days I guess. ;)

Yeah I had no idea that boat would keep up, let alone start pulling me after 100mph.

The way people do it these days I guess is the 3rd honk is the 'go' honk. I didnt mash it until the 3rd honk and he had already mashed it before it so right when the 3rd honk came he was going. kinda like the christmas tree at the strip, anticipated. But yeah, those things are sleepers. If I didnt have my wait4me I woulda got dusted, because @ 65 my truck would downshift into 3rd at some lame RPM instead of 2nd at around 5000. I was pretty impressed, I figured that big thing weighed around what my truck weighs.

So Im pretty sure its "honk honk ho(go)nk" The 3rd light is kinda the green light.

You guys think that car being FWD helped?

  More than likely. Im gonna race him from a stop when it quits raining and the roads dry up. Im not sure if I should tho, that thing's kinda quick.

Yeah but they are also pretty heavy...but so is you truck.

You should be able to take him from a stop. They run like mid 15's. I had an eldorado v8 just pre-northstar it had a 240lbs tq, but it only had 145hp the thing was OK for a 17 year old car but it just got dusted from a 0-60. Front wheel drive doesn't help on the launch unless its slippery. The northstar is an awesome engine and if the mid 90's cars weren't such tankers they would be competing with easily with mustangs.

I think the reason why he pulled on you after 100mph is your aerodynamics or lack there of really started to come into play. The slight power advantage you had went out the window at that speed. As boxy as the STS it still has much less frontal surface area pushing air.

Sounds like a good explanation. Becuase it s**ts and gets up until around 100, keeps pulling but a bit slower. Im not too worried, I dont like racing at high speeds, Im more of a from a stop-slow roll, to however fast is safe, max is usually 90ish-100ish anyways, thats when I always let off. Tires are only rated for 93mph also. Plus its a d**n truck :P:cry:

Whenever tax returns come around Ill get back under the hood and toss on a few bolt ons and ship my PCM back and get it re-tuned. Im thinking mass air sensor, an air intake and a ram air kit to go with. Even tho Im not a beleiver in the cold air intakes, ram air kits are only a little over 100 and they bolt up the the intake box, Volant makes one. Pullies would be nice too. Im not sure If I'd have to get it re-tuned with the intake and Ram air, but the mass air sensor, Im thinking is a probobly. But Ive also heard they cause problems. Ive still got plenty of time to research.
