Hi fellows. does anyone know what GM is going to replace the big block V8 in the 900 subs and trucks with? It seem that the RV people, who need the big block to pull the big RVs are being left with the high price diesels in trucks only. Not everybody wants diesels, GM better come out with a high Torque gas engine. I would like to here from others if they have heard anythang , Lets here from you.

Look below at the thread titled "Day before SEMA" for the answer. It isnt what you want to hear. The only engine they are offering in gas is the 6.0

I've heard rumors that the Big Block will be coming back in the near future. But it's just that...rumor.

I'm driving an 8.1/CC and love it. Getting 11-11.5 MPG around town and 12-14 highway. Pretty darn close to my 6.0 brothers. And another perk is the Allison transmission mated to my Big Block torque monster.

Someone once said GM was looking to move towards a V-10 option. For some reason the V-10 is easier to make meet emision standards(?). That would be strange, since Dodge discontinued their V-10 a few years back. And the Ford V-10 is a gas hog (not saying the 8.1 is great, but better than the V-10's)

I'm very disapointed that there's no 8.1. I own both an 8.1-burb and a 6.0 pick-up, and I was eager to buy the new 900 pick-up with a 8.1 and gm stuck me in the ribs cause now i can't even order a classic with an 8.1. And your right on that the only difference is about 1-2mpg for me to. I tow RVs too, and the 8.1 is a pleasure while the 6.0 is scary (both 4:10's). I may be forced to buy a new 6.0, as my current 6.0 is overdue, and keep the old 8.1 going for as long as possible. I will not buy a diesel. I'd even settle for the 6.2, but we can't get that in pick-ups, what a joke. It's just my luck that I'll order the 6.0 and they'll announce a 8.1 replacement. GM's missing the boat on us RV'ers, but then so is Ford and Dodge. I think I'll save my 40K untill they come up with something.

Chris I feel the same way. I'm not going to spend $40k just becasue they came out with a new truck. If it isn't what I want, I'm going to keep my old one. I want a new truck, but thats a lot of money for a want.

I agree with all of you guys. What is GM thinking? Diesel is 40 to 50 cents/gallon more expensive than regular, and the diesel costs a lot more, not to mention the new low sulfur requirements. I had decided to get a new HD with the 8.1 and allison trani. Now it is not offered. I would settle for the 6.2 also (tuned like in the cadi with 400 horses and 420 ft/lbs torque), but it's not offered. We know nothing of the new trani that goes with the 6.0. I was really looking for a new 8.1 tuned like in the Malibu boats by Indmar (450 horses, 525 ft/lbs torque). Wouldn't that be awesome! Put it with the allison 6-speed and a 3.73 rear end and add the cylinder deactivation and it might get 15 mpg!

Typical GM. Remember when in 1996 they changed to the "Vortec" engines? I bought a brand new 1995 Chevy 2500 and was talked out of the 454 by the dealer. He talked me into the 350 and unfortunately, I listened. I hated that truck and wanted a different one. That truck litterally would not pass another car at 55 mph with the AC on. They checked it out and it was fine. Also, after purchasing the truck, I found out the wife was pregnant, so an extended cab was wanted as well. During this time, the 96 models came out with the "Vortec" engines and they would not let you get a 454 engine unless you got a 3500 dually. They said that the new 350 had the same power as the old 454. Fine, but I WANT A 454!! was my cry. I decided against the Chevy all together and bought a Dodge 2500 4x4 Ext. cab with the V10 and loved it! I think a year or two later, they started putting the 454 in the 2500 trucks again. A few years later, I wanted a crew cab and Dodge did not offer a true crew cab truck, but Chevy did and at that point, I finally got my 454 engine.

Will they ever learn??

if its gas mileage concenrs i thought anything 3/4 ton and up was not rated so unless something has changed i dont get the problem. Towing wise there is no comparison between the 8.1 and the 6.0

I remember being told that jazz in '96 about Vortec 454's only coming in dually's. What I found out (though a good salesman) was that though the 454 was available in 3500's only, you could delete the dual rear wheels. So, I ordered a 454 3500 with single rear wheels. That truck is still in my garage.

Indmar can get those kind of numbers because they dont have to deal with emissions....

Then how come the 6.2L in the Escalade has almost the same numbers as the Indmar 6.2L in a Malibu boat? If they would make the 8.1L, I'd take 425 horses and 500 ft-lbs!

Completly different motors. THe Indmar 6.2 Hammerhead is a stroked 5.7 Vortec (old technology). THe Escalade 6.2L is a bored out 6.0 LQ9 motor.

Well, you have the new L92 based on LS2, which is just a 6.2, with some numbers, but not that torque down low, just doesnt have the displacement.

Gas mileage is NOT and is RARELY IF EVER a concern of 8.1L haulers, we knew that going into it, we just didnt want the motor to wheeze its way to 50.

It's not all lost though, you can find crate 8.1's and drop it in place of the 6.0 all day long, the 07 2500 suburban rides on the GMT800, and the 6.0 still uses the same motor mounts, and the transmission would adapt just as easily. Just don't live in Californistan :banghead:

There's a significant chunk of 8.1's used for non-automotive purposes, gen, marine, off highway, so it'll be a very long time before these engines become a rear( 8.1's will last WAY over 250K miles.)

for ref, a heads & mild cammed 8.1 puts out 550 and 650ft.lbs. lol supercharge and get pistons and your talking quad digit number torque.
