GM Nav HU questions

Hi Everyone, Working on putting a TNR in my 05 SDCC.

Have what I thought to be a verified Lux Nav, Part number 15230099.

However, when I put it in my Denali, it works, but no sound.

Theftlock is still activated, I can bypass once, that is where I figure out I get no sound.

Quetions are:

How do I verify this sytem is a Lux? EQ settings are EQ 1-4 & Custom, does this in itself mean non-lux?

If I take it to a gm dealer, and have the theftlock removed, will it "repogram" the unit to the Denali, IE eq settings will be spacious, driver ect?

Is there any place that repairs/reprograms these units? I don't want to have to hunt for another one if i can help it.

Thanks for the help!

You need to have the nav programmed with a Tech2. What you describe is normal, lights up with no sound, until programming is complete. Your dealer will douwnload the info from your Denali to a Tech2, then connect the Tech2 to GMonline PC. There he will change settings(letting the truck know what radio is installed), then reload the new info to the truck via Tech2. The whole thing should take about 30 minutes...

is there a list of GM techs on here somewhere that know things like this? it would be nice to be able to have a local contact for things like this.

Radio Setup With RPO UM8

Radio Theftlock Clear Procedure

Complete the following procedure, using a scan tool, in order to properly set up communication:

Using a connected Tech2,

1. At the Main Menu screen, select: Diagnostics.

2. At the Vehicle Identification screen, select the following options:

? Model Year

? LD Trk, MPV, Incomplete

3. At the System Selection Menu screen, select: Body

4. At the Vehicle Identification screen, select the following:

? Appropriate model

? Appropriate Air Conditioning

? Navigation Radio

5. At the Body Screen, select: Navigation Radio.

6. At the Radio screen, select: Special Functions.

7. At the Special Functions screen, select: VIN Relearn.

8. At the VIN Relearn screen, the scan tool will display "Do you want to clear radio theft information?"

9. To begin clearing, press the soft touch key on the top right of the scan tool. The scan tool will display "Clearing Radio Theft in Progress."

10. Press EXIT on the scan tool and cycle the ignition.

Important:

The radio theft will learn the VIN. Without learning the VIN, the radio will display a locked message (LOC or LOCKED).

Well, got it programed and still didn't work. It must be mis-labled from GM (who knows!). Still shows the eq settings from a non-lux system, so guess I'll have to sell it and keep looking.

Thanks for the responses!

I believe the AMP designates whether it is a LUX system...not the HU - the HU just follows it. And the LUX amp is wired COMPLETELY different than the std BOSE amp. SO, if you have a LUX style HU and the std bose amp...you prolly won't get any sound.

But never fear...you can fix all this.

1) confirm which amp you have - check all the RPO CODES to see what you have - or get a physical look at your amp. The Lux amp looks considerably different than the std amp.

2) match the system - you can do one of 2 things. get the right amp.. or have your HU programmed to match the amp you have. There is a helpfull guy in Michigan that can do all the reprogramming for you. The guy goes by [email protected] .

I don't know if machomachodan has been referenced on this board...but many of the AVALANCHE people use him.

Avalanche Fan Club

Do a search for his name there.

Find out what your truck really has in it and you should be on the way to sound.

Yeah, what Dave said. I don't know what the guy in Michigan charges, though.

If you want to find out for sure if your headunit is lux or non-lux, do a search on here for the pn.

I'd be really surprised if a dealer could/would reprogram a non-lux hu to a lux one.

Also, if your hu is non-lux, you can't just swap to a non-lux amp. You'd also have to do some rewiring of the amp harness. You don't want to do that anyways, because you'd lose the lux sound quality.

Hi,

I have installed and INR nav and lux bose amp in my 04 Sierra ext cab. I am in Canada, and went through the process above. The dealer tells me GM won't let them 'turn on' that function for my truck because it isn't supposed to have that radio. It works when I bypass the theftlock but the Tech 2 doesn't communicate with the radio to unlock it.

Anybody venture what would happen if I put an unlocked radio in there. Would it marry to the VIN and work? Any other ideas on how to unlock this one in the truck? Maybe a trip to a US dealer? Seems you guys don't run into the same problems down there.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I would expect so, but I'm unsure why the dealer wasn't able to unlock it with the procedure outlined above...

Went to 3 different dealers today. The one that let me observe got as far as selecting the Navigation radio on the tech 2 and it said 'digital radio not communicating'. Anybody had this happen? The radio works fine using the Theftlock bypass with the key in the ACC position.

The one thing I am not clear on from all the reading I am doing. Do you just do the unlock procedure with the tech 2 or does info need to be dnloaded to the tech 2, then get some info from GM(online) and then upload that info back into the vehicle to let the truck know the nav radio is there? I am seeing both answers in the reading I am doing, can someone clarify this?

Thanks

I personally watched a dealer service manager clear the theftlock on my INR that I bought from eBay. He never hooked up the Tech II to the GM online thingy. He just plugged the handheld into my truck, and then he punched the couple of buttons to go through the unlock procedure, and then it was done. And it's not like he did some downloading behind the scenes beforehand. When he plugged the handheld up to my truck, he'd been given no prior info about my truck. I KNOW he didn't download anything from GM.

That's why I'm still confused about your problem. I wish I could help more. I know what it's like to be in a situation like yours and feel helpless. I hope someone with more know-how than me can shed some more light on this...

This is what limited info I have on the subject:

The tech II asks for the model of the truck during the process of clearing the VIN. If your truck is not listed...you SUBSTITUTE another model that is there.

And NO, they did not request any info from GM online when they reset mine. They just hooked up the Tech II and did everything at the truck.

Also..if the vin is already cleared...the HU should learn anew one when it powers up the first time.

Hey Jon and Dave,

Thanks for giving me a clear idea of what should be done. Thanks for your help and comments. I am leaving on Friday for a few weeks with family down south. I will deal with all this again after the New Year, and post my results.

Season's greetings to all!
