Newbie Questions and Introduction

Whats up everyone? I'm new here and new to chevy trucks. I bought a 1983 c-10 last night, and this will be my first American car. I am big into VW's and have owned a few. I am used to doing my own work, and plan to continue that with the chevy. It has a crate 350 in it that runs like s**t. I was wondering what the valves should be set at, as well as the points. I don't know if this is universal on a crate motor, and have no idea of what has been done to the engine. She want to idle rough and fall on her face when you first give her gas. After that she seems to run ok when she gets up. Anyways I will be seeing alot of you guys in the future.

Here she is.

You have an '83 model truck with points? It should have come from the factory with some form of an HEI distributor. IF you do have points, 30 degrees of dwell should be a good starting point.

If you have a hydraulic cam, zero lash plus one half turn should be a good valve adjustment.

Does the truck have a quadrajet? Falling on it's face when you give it gas sounds like a dead accelerator pump in the carburetor.
