Topic of discussion here at work. How important is it to run a scan disk then a disk clean and finally a disk defrag? Mainly in that order.

I feel it is something that should be done every so often depending on how much the computer gets used, software install/removal and so forth. It to me is a preventative maintenance task.

Some here at work don't feel it is all worth that and never really do it.

Anyone???

Its very important to run disk cleanup and disk defrag. It keeps your hard drives data cleaned up and organized. If you dont, itll just get cluttered and slow things down. I do mine at least once a week.

I haven't defragged my home PC in a couple of years, and it runs fine. It will run for a month at a time without needing a reboot (WinXP Pro).

But then, I do this for a living, so I keep all my computers clean to begin with. Nothing extra is ever running, I don't download stupid things, etc. I'm also the only person using them.

I'm not sure how important scandisc is, unless you're having problems.

I defrag only when the 'analyze' function tells me the drive needs defragging. Anybody else have an opinion on this? If you defrag more often than it says it needs it, is it because you get noticeably better results, or because you know something I don't?

I've never been a big believer in disk defrag. I haven't run a defrag on my PC since I built it 2 years ago, I could run one now and I bet I'd never notice a difference.

I'm a computer guy now for the last 40 years. So here are my suggestions:

ScanDisk - mainly required when you suspect a HardDrive (HD) problem; e.g. slow system

Disck Clean - when you are starting to run low on Free disk space; e.g. less than 1 Gig free

Defrag - this function was very neccessary in the days when we had small HD's and small RAM and SLOW computers. As the HD space got fragmented, the system was unable to run programs efficiently and would eventually grind to a halt. So defrag needed to be run quite regularly. Now, if you have a lot of HD and RAM, and you don't have it loaded with stuff, defrag likely won't make a noticeable difference. Irun mine about twice a year, just to clean things up.

BUT, virus scan and adware scan are an absolute must to be run at the VERY LEAST, weekly.
