DIY steering clunk fix

OK, I just got it, and I need to fix it. Is this a DIY job? If so what grease do I need? Is there a generic or do I need to get the kit from GM?

Any pointers appreciated.

(I am in Europe, and it would be cheaper to put the truck on a boat to the US, get it done and then ship it back here than to pay these thieves here to do it).

Thanks in advance.

You need the grease kit. I tried it my self and had trouble getting the shaft out from the inside. When I saw it done they moved some things under the dash to make it easier. So there are little tricks to make it work. Do a search on silveradoss.com, someone posted a link to the how to.

Has anyone contemplated putting a grease fitting on the shaft somewhere so that it won't need to be taken apart everytime it needs lubing?

Im just throwing this out there as I have been one of the lucky ones where my steering shaft has been fine..........but im pretty anal and if mine was needing grease every so often.....I would be looking at tapping a zerk fitting in it somewhere.

Just a thought............

I wonder what section they are greasing, I thought it was under the hood, but sounds like it might be under the dash. Either way it can't be that hard to drill a hole tap it and screw in a zerk...

Yes, that is it. Just read the tech article I listed and you will see what is involved.

OK, so I decided to take a look at what is going on with the shaft. I reached down and grabbed it, and it has something like 3/8 to 1/2 an inch lateral play  no up down, and no rotational movement what so ever. To me this just seems too much. Could this be more than just the issue reported in the TSB?

I didn't pull the rubber boot off, since I was just looking at this point, but now I am very concerned. I was expecting that I would have to really shake the thing to feel any movement, but this is a joke.

The boot need not come off. It pulls out from the inside after it is unbolted. A little trickier than expected. When it s filled with grease it needs to be compresssed to remount.

It sort of looked like that.

But what about all that play, is that basically what i will fix it I apply the TSB? And I guess with the new "getting your shaft stroked" twist, I guess I don't need the kit?? Is that correct?

So I guess you are saying that this is "normal". Its hard to believe that there is that much play just because of grease. I could imagine an 1/8th or maybe even a 1/4 inch taken up, but never imagined that this Steering issue was this major.

Does anyone know for sure that its safe? Has anyone heard any reports of a complete failure of the joint, or is it just an "annoyance".

I gotta say when I grabbed that thing and it moved, I started to get a bit nervous driving.

Okay so as i am reading this im haveing the same problem in my truck on the 03. Only when it cold i get the knocking noise from my steering sharft almost. I been woundering what that knocking been for a while so their is a fitting somewhere that just needs to be gresed up? If so that sounds really easy to do.

I still find it hard to believe that this much movement could be considered normal. I can see that grease could take up some slack, but surely there cant be 1/2 inch that would be a d**n lot of grease.
