Rubber Protectant

Recommended Posts

For years I've used WD-40 [ I buy it by the gallon ] to use on the rubber bushings , etc. on the undercarriage of my trucks. I've always thought that it was the best way to provide longevity for these parts. Am I using the right stuff, or is there something better? The WD-40 container does not mention anything about protecting rubber. What is this 303 stuff that Extang says to use on my new soft bed cover?

There are two products on the market similar to 303, the other is Protect All. Both claim to be some kind of "forever" protectant. I just bought a bottle of Protect All and am using it on my decals on my camper to keep them from aging. The guys on my RV forum swear by both of these products. You can buy the Protect All at Wal Mart in the RV section for about 8.00 for 16 ozs.

IMO, I would not think WD 40 would be a good thing on your bushings but that is just MO. There was also a product on the market called Ru Glide that was made by AGS American Grease Stick. I am not sure if it is still around. Most every shop in the 60s and 70s kept this stuff on hand for body and rubber sqeaks and it was great.

I don`t think wd-40 originally was meant to be a rubber type protectant, although it has many uses. 303 Protectant is a vinyl and rubber protectant. It blocks out the UV rays, and it dries to the touch, so no more messy tires or other stuff. I have used 303 for 3 years now. What a great product. My old tonneau company recommend it also, so I tried it. www.303protectant.com to learn more. It is alittle more $ than armour all, but well worth the piece of mind knowing the vinyl will not dry out and crack. But, do not get me wrong, I think everything will dry out eventiually in the sun, but this will prolong it. Just my $.02 worth.

In my experience, WD-40 dries out everything it touches, and is done "protecting" as soon as it evaporates, which is in about 13 seconds.

Spraying the bushings with protectant, I never thought of doing that.

I seem to remember bushings starting to get cracked by around 5 or more years. If spraying them with protectant can extend the life it's pretty easy to do although my track record lately is only been keeping trucks for about 5-6 years before getting a new one.

off topic but what do you guys use on plastic?  like the plastic around the wiper ect...

I use a product from Dura Gloss that I think comes in a small black bottle. It is made specifically for exterior black or gray trim. It is very durable and looks great. I am not at home right now or I would get the name and part # for you.

I use this, it works pretty well. Like someone said about the 303, it dries to the touch and makes your plastics and rubber look much better.

I treated my dash board and it has remained extremely shiney for months now.
