problems with overdrive

My buddy has a 1997 GMC truck with the 5.7 Vortec. sometimes it wont shift into overdrive, other times it will. anybody have any idea what could be causing this? thanks

I would say check fluid levels. When I was driving an old minivan with a hole in the trans pan, it would do this when it got low.

yeah, i was thinking that too. would it only do it occasionally or was it all the time that it wouldn't shift into OD?

All shifts up the line were sluggish. It felt like you had to rev the engine higher then normal to get it in gear. but yeah that is when i'd know it was starting to get low, it would do it sometimes and just keep getting worse.
