Sounds from the dash

When my truck is running you can hear a Whrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr sound from behind the dash at idle speeds. It doesn't matter if you are sitting at a light, or sitting in park it only really is there when the vehicle idles. Now, if you rev the engine or start driving it will disipate.

 

It's driving me nuts. I've got a 99 Yukon with 5.7L @94k.

 

Sorry for the non-technical description, but I do'nt know any other way to describe it.

 

Also, while searching for the above sound, I noticed I have a lifter tick in the passenger side of the engine closest to the firewall. I asked someone about it and they told me I could just remove the cover and adjust the lifter. He also said that it could be robbing a bit of HP, but that other then that it would not hurt anything to leave it. My question is. Will this cause premature lifter/valve/engine wear by having this maladjusted? the tick is not everywhere, only from what sounds like the one lifter and that's it, so it's not an oil problem at all.

on the sound. I was out there listening for it and noticed that you can hear it for about a second and a half after you shut the engine off. I've check the fans by turning them on, up, down, then back off, and it has no effect on the sound.

Could it be the fan inside the radio? Does it happen if it is cold? If not, it is probably the radio. Mine does it but usually I only notice after a long drive where the interior is warm and the radio has been on for a while.

warm, cold, running for along time, short trip. does it all the time.

 

when you turn the key on but not all the way to start you hear the Throttle position motor (or whatever its called) move into place. Also, if you have someone listen you can hear something that sounds like its comming from below the Master cylender. Then you hear these sounds for a second or 2 after you shut the vehicle off. Indicateing that they are not engine controled items, but independant systems.

 

I will have to poke around more under the hood and see if I can find whats all down there.
