5.3L Upgrade?

I have a '99 Sierra 1500 2wd 5.3 and am looking to get more power. I have k&N air filter and a Flowmaster muffler. What should i do next? Are computer programers and chips a good route? What types/brands work the best without hurting fuel economy, octane, and reliability?

The best way to go is to get the pcm custom tuned. Wester's, Nelson, Wait4Me are a few names.
