Removing Chevrolet tailgate emblem

Recommended Posts

I have a '97 K2500 with the large aluminum "Chevrolet" emblem across the tailgate.  Looking to do some customizing, anyone have any experience removing this emblem?  From what I can tell, it's glued on.  I don't want to take it off and find I can't remove the glue residue!

Thanks!

JGriffen,

The best thing I've found for removing glue residue from automobiles is called GooGone.  I large bottle of this along with a razor blade and a lot of patience has worked for me on many occasions.  Just remember you have to take it slow and work it off a layer at a time.  The one thing you might run into that could throw a stone in the works is the fact that all of the raised lettering that I've come across on tailgates is held on with small brads or snap fastners and when removed will leave holes in your tailgate.  This may not be true on your vintage of truck though.

Good Luck,

John

Back in the early 90's, a friend of mine took the one off his '90 model and there were no holes.  It was held on with some double sided tape type stuff.  You may want to try using a piece of fishing line and placing it between the body and the aluminium plate, use a "sawing" motion and cut throught the tape.  They go back and clean all the junk off.

The only thing I'd be concerned with is since it's a '97, there might be some noticible fading.  But if your customizing includes repainting, I wouldn't worry about it.  :D

We have found one of the better methods (of removing glue residue) available on the shelf is lighter fluid on a rag.  The best removers are available at sign shops.  Some sell remover in bottles to the public.  They are very powerful and not available in the retail market.  You'll save yourself a lot of headache.

Use a heat gun will come right off without having to mess with googone!!

Yup, lighter fluid works wonders!!!  So does Kerosene.  :D

All the newer trucks are all double sided stickum stuff.  No more riveting or bradding the logos in place as that would lead to a possible place for corrosion to start.

Removed the emblem today, used a heat gun and it slowly pulled right off.  Almost no residue remained.  A little wax and it looks like it was never there.  Thanks for all the suggestions!
