20" Wheels Road Walk

Recommended Posts

I have an '05 GMC Denali pickup that road walks with the new 20" wheels and tires I put on it. The 20" wheels are made by Soverign and the tires are Yokohama 285/50-20s. I put my OEM 6-spoke 265/70-17's back on this winter and the steering is perfect.

I know GM puts 20" wheels out on stock trucks so what's wrong with mine? I contacted the dealer (Tire Rack) where I bought the wheels and they were no help. The wheels were purchased for this truck from the dealer's recommendation.

Can the new tire widths, potential wheel offset, or something else change front end alignment enought to cause the poor driveability? Any ideas?

There is a TSB about installing larger wheels and tires on your GM full size truck. I don't have it with me now, and I'm not sure if it's in my truck. But I have 20" rims and it does effect your gas mileage and road feel. It also effects your brakes.

Anyone look up the TSB about the larger rims?

it won t effect the alignment but will effect the driveablity. My 07 has 20 s from GM and are fine. I think they are only 265 s. Your 285 s are pretty wide and depending on the manufacturer can road walk. My 04 SS had 20 s and where also fine. I think it s got more to do with the tire width and brand than anything else.

I've got 305/40/22's on my Tahoe, and they definitely ride much different than stock. The alignment is fine, (suspension gets aligned, not tires), but it walks all over the place on bad roads (most of them here in NJ). Ruts in the road are the worst, but they look so much better than stock, I'll live with it.

I have 295/45/20 on my Sierra and their is a difference in the feel of the road and get a lil road hop in the front but i think i need new shocks. But might have to wide of a wheel for the front. I did not notice much of a fuel difference i till get the same gas milage but also i got intake and exhause.i think ya can get spacers for the wheels but probly not a good idea cause of the strenght of them.

I have 305/50/20 and mine tracks different than stock. The wider the tire, the more the tires will follow the road crown, no matter what vehicle its on.
