Diesel Emissions Testing

I saw a post on The Diesel Place that indicated PA was going to start emissions testing on diesels this year. I looked for news articles and on the PA Power Port and couldn't find anything about it. Is this just a rumor or has anyone heard about this? I want to get rid of the cat nad muffler on the Dmax, but now I'm not so sure.

I don't know about testing in PA but I'm interested in any info that someone might have because I live in PA myself...

I do know that for gas motors in the HD trucks that they are exempt from emission testing because of their GVW. I would have to assume that the diesel engines in the heavy GVW calsses would be exempt too, and maybe the emission tests would only be for small diesels in cars and lighter vehicles... (lets hope!)

For sure, I have my 2500 HD registered at 7000#, class 2. That may have to change. Grove City is close!! I live in between Ellwood City and Zelienople.

It doesn't matter that you have your truck registered at 7000#. Mine is registered down also... All that matters is that the GVW is 9200 lbs and it becomes exempt in PA... (at least for gas motors and I hope diesels)

BTW... if you ever want to get together for a beer or just some BS let me know!

I've been working at a diesel manufacturing plant for almost 19 years now... I know that the Feds have been placing new regulations on diesel emmisions for our engines. We are at what we call Tier II emissions now... All of our new engines have to meet these standards. However, all of our rebuilt engines are grandfathered in under the emission standards at which they were originally manufactured.

We build medium speed diesels in the 2500-6000 HP range. We build between 2000 and 2500 of these engines every year. Most are for locomotives, but we build a fair amount of them for marine and stationary power. In fact the Bagdad airport has been powered by our stationary 4600 HP engines for several years now...

A get together would be be cool. Once I get back on daylight in about six weeks I'll pm you. My brother works for Marine Systems Inc, he does onsite rebuilds on EMDs. This is my first oil burner and I'll have lots of questions.

If your bro works around here ask him to come along for a night on the town! EMD is our biggest competor... ( or Greenbrier or who ever owns them now)

I work for GE and we build over 1/2 of all the Locomotive engines that are on the rails today!!!

Our engines are built here in Grove City and then shipped by truck to Erie PA where they are placed in the locomotive. Rebuit engines normally ship to the railroads, unless it is a total overhaul.

We are strictly a diesel engine plant... It's kind of crazy to believe that the majority of all locomotive engines in the United States come from a little town in Western Pennsylvania...!
