is there a low mileage exemption from smog testing

Hello. I'm a new member here. I was pointed in this direction from the Corvetteforum. :D

Well, I just moved into Mongomery County, TX (from Hardin County) and now it looks like I'll have to get a tailpipe emissions test on my '86 Silverado in order to get an inspection sticker. I'm worried that it won't pass. Is there an exemption for vehicles driven less than a minimum number of miles per year? I drive mine < 1500 mi /yr.

Welcome to Montgomery County and the forum. I have property in Hardin Co. also that my father lived on in Lumberton. I'm a emmissions tech here in SW Montgomery Co.

To answer your question, I don't think there is. I've never heard of it in any case, even farm use vehicles have to pass if driven on public highways. If you have antique or special (parade) vehicle plates then you don't but antiques are exempt after 25 years anyways.

Bring it to my shop and I'll get it to pass if need be. It's Gersitz Auto on FM1 488.

Thanks for the welcome. Boy it's a small world. I lived in Lumberton for seven years. We finally moved back to our home area (Spring - Conroe) after being gone since 1994. I also have a /79 Camaro and was always able to get by on inspections in Silsbee. Now it's over 25 years old, and as you mentioned, it's old enough so that all it has to do is pass a safety inspection.

Hey I do appreciate your response. I'll definitely bring it to you soon - probably on a Friday since I get every other Friday off. That's a load off my mind ! I'll be in touch!

Just wanted to provide an update. Last year, after failing the smog test, I had two 2-1/2 inch cats welded into my aftermarket duel exhaust. It passed. I don't want to type in all the numbers, but It passed Nox and CO with no problem, HC was at the limit - if it was one digit higher, it would have failed!

Well that was a year ago. It was time to get it re-tested last month. I had forgotten reading about changing the oil right before the test. Well I changed it, and the results were unbelievable - it was damn near zero for all 3 components. It passed with flying colors!

Change the oil before you test.
