03-06 high-beam kit

This install is a safety install. You can see what it does when you drive down a dark road pull back on the beam selector and see the difference between high beam only and high beam with low beam and fog lights. High beam puts little light to the sides close to the vehicle and in these moutians, you need to see the rocks coming down the hill and the animals running across the road. I love it!!!

 

I have the whole thing with pictures, but it is too big for this post.

 

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS 03-06 CHEVY/GMC TRUCK

 

First obtain a kit from http://www.mrtaillight.com these are well built and only need comon tools for the entire install. My kit cost me less than $20.00 including shipping!

 

1) Lie out the entire kit and read the directions carefully before you begin the installation. Your kit should include the following items:

3-T-clips, 1-Wire harness, 2-Wire tie, 1-Mounting screw

Optional items you may want to use: Liquid electrical tape, Additional wire ties, Wire loom, ¼-3/8”

 

 

2) Remove the driver side headlight assembly by removing the retaining bar and lifting the unit out of its mounting slots.

 

 

3) Enlarge the mounting hole in the left relay with a ¼” drill bit. Use a 10 MM socket to remove the bolt under the headlight mount.

 

 

4) Mount the relay to this bolt making sure you place the ground ring terminal onto the bolt first to ensure a good ground then tighten the bolt.

 

 

5) Pull the positive wires from the stock headlight wiring from the stock loom. Yellow wire on the low beam, Green wire on the high beam. Attach T-clips to these wires. And seal the connection with liquid electrical tape to fight corrosion. Cover the white and blue wires from the kit in separate pieces of loom. Feed the white wire through the opening behind the DRL and the blue wire through the hole behind the turn signal. Attach the white wire to the T-clip on the high beam positive wire and the blue wire to the T-clip on the low beam positive wire.

 

 

6) Carefully push the T-clip and wires back into the stock looms. Tape the loom from the white wire to the high beam wiring loom and the loom from the blue wire to the low beam wiring loom. This will prevent the wires from being pulled and damaged.

 

7) Feed the long loomed wire to the driver side fog light, (if equipped). Disconnect the fog light wiring harness from the fog light and pull out the violet positive wire. Attach a T-clip to the violet wire and seal the connection with liquid electrical tape. Connect the long loomed wire to the T-clip and carefully push it into the stock wiring harness. Tape the wiring looms together and use a wire tie to secure a drain loop to protect the connections.

 

 

8) Locate the red battery stud box on the front of the engine on the driver’s side. Open the box and carefully drill a ¼ “ hole in the bottom of the box. Cut out any material between the hole and the front of the box to create a U-shaped hole to place the double ring terminal wires. This will also serve as a drain hole. Fish the long loomed wire with the fuses through the hole behind the turn signal and between the battery and fender, then between the battery and the fuse box to the red battery stud box. Be careful to route the loom away from hot and moving engine parts. Place the ring terminal onto the accessory stud using an 11/16 socket. Use wire ties to secure excess wire away from hot or moving parts.

(If your vehicle does not have this box, fish the wire to the fuse box behind the battery and secure it to a 12V+ stud inside this box.)

 

 

 

9) Turn on your low beam headlights and look at the passenger side. The outside lamp should be the only one on. Next turn on your fog lamps, (if equipped), you should have the low beam headlight and fog light only. Next turn on your high beam headlight. All of the lights should be on. If any of these tests fail, check your wiring, ground and battery stud connections, correct any errors and try again.

 

10) Reconnect and reinstall the drivers side headlight and reconnect the drivers side fog light. CONGRATULATIONS YOU ARE FINISHED, (except the cleanup).

Just bought one of these same kits last week, hasn't arrived yet. I have their 4 high already in but I'm changing to 4 high w/fogs. My wife's envoy will get the old on.

Did the same thing on my 03 sub and cost me about $1.50. Used a couple of 12 volt diodes and have a six hi and 4 low and fogs on without head lights on.

 

The fogs really don't do much for illumination only looks when they are on with the high beams. They most certainly don't do what they are supposed to do and that is provide a flat low beam that cuts through fog and other bad visibility situations.

The fogs definately help to add light where the low beams are missing. mainly to the sides of the truck.

Here is a pic of the kit. You can add the diode if you want, or even build the kit yourself, but plug and play is the easy way to go.

 

How does the kit having you connect to your lights? I can't really tell in the pic. It looks like it may have you usings spade connectors. I don't really want to have to cut the stock harness if I don't have to. If that ends up being the only route then so be it.

 

I know about the $1.00 diode deal and have diodes. Ideally what I would like is a T-Harness connecter for the headlight connectors. That way you plug in your stock connector to use as the relay trigger then it comes out of the relay with a little larger wire into a stock type headlight plug that plugs directly into the bulb. This way I can run power straight from the battery to the headlights through a little larger wire and cut down on any voltage loss.

 

I'm not interested in higher wattage bulbs, but I am in the country so I want to maximise my lighting the best I can.

So you should consider upgrading to HID.

all the kit has you do is use spade connectors.... taps into the positive wire on each bulb harness... then you connect the kits power wire to the alternator 12v junction box. If you dont have the junction box u can go direct to batt. this kit does not overload the factory harness where as the .79 diode does. :)

 

if you have fog lights, you can get the kit i got that allows fogs to be on also with the lows and highs which maximizes your viewing distance plus side lighting. I wouldnt suggest going with higher watt bulbs but to really take your lighting to the extreme you can pick up a set up new bulbsw made by "euro dezigns"

 

search for them on ebay (can also find them on thaere under "xenon")... you can get the 3 set kit --2 high beam sets for highs and fogs, and 1 low beam set for $45 shipped usually!! and they have a lifetime warranty! These things are a great bright white!!! I would never seitch back to factory bulbs again!

As metioned in an earlier post this mod can be done for only a couple dollars. Here is a link with pictures about what is needed and how to do it. Diode price is 79 cents and then the shrink wrap is a couple bucks.

I just finished doing the "diode 4 hi mod". Contrary to popular belief, your factory harness is not overloaded since the diodes only trigger the relays for the lights. Bill is 100% right, this took me about 10 minutes to do. I just finished doing it...the only part is that you need to test them, then if they're wrong you just flip the diode around and do it the other way. When my hi+low diode was in wrong, the highs were on when the low beams were on...flipping the diode gives you hi+low when the high is on. I have them wired now so fogs and lows come on with the highs...I'll see how they are tonight but they look great so far. Very pleased with the $1 investment! Plus you can go back to stock in 30 seconds with no spliced/tapped wires!

    • Does your dealer charge you for the tire rotation on top of the oil change price ?. I haven't had any service work done at my dealer yet other than when I brought it back soon after owning it to have the front end aligned to correct the steering wheel being off center a bit. Oh they called me at least twice hounding me to bring it in for an oil change and pushing a 300.00 package of oil change and tire rotation and whatever other quick simplistic checks they would do. Only going off of what a friend gets charged for his half ton for the basic oil change and its the same amount of oil as the L8T holds, it was about 150.00. Once one buys a set of tires from most shops these days or so I believe, they will do free tire rotations and some do free tire balancing as well as free tire repairs.    Certainly doing a tire rotation is no five minute job, and definitely not at home but because I run a set of winter tires on their own wheels, I swap them at home and its a one tire at a time deal because of the tire season swap although I jack up the rear and do it and drop it back down and then raise the front and do them and coordinate the tire rotation into that process for both sets of tires. I am using a floor jack though and if I need to raise both ends at once I use a couple sets of jack stands to have all four tires off the ground. I use either an air impact or battery impact and have electric impact as well so no shortage there of easy methods to spin the lug nuts, and then retorquing the lug nuts. None of it goes quick though but my wages are cheap though ... zero. I live an hour out of town, its easier just to do things like that myself than waste a bunch of time in town and having to make an appointment and probably a special trip and sit there at the tire shop waiting for them to get my vehicle in and get it done and not screw something up in the process. 
    • I do have the 8 speed.  Interestingly enough, after driving my truck for the past 2 days now, I have not had the clunking issue at all!  I am beginning to think it may have been suspension/leaf spring related, and somehow when the shop put my truck on the lift to do their initial inspection, it relieved some built up tension/pressure that was causing my problem.  I swear it felt I was a bull rider on a bucking bull the way the truck would almost rock back and forth slightly before the big thud/clunk when coming to a stop.  I am hoping I got lucky here and it's gone for good.
    • Bring it to discount tire. They do free rotations even if you didn’t buy your tires there. I didn’t believe it until I tried and they did. You can tip the employee if you would like 
    • Best part of this video is how it resets expectations. Wonderfully done piece. It also made clear a few points I've made from day one. Detergent oils DO NOT KEEP A MOTOR CLEAN at the recommended or longer change intervals. They just get dirty slower than a non-detergent oil and there isn't spits difference between them on this point if they carry the DEXOS license. Great thing about the license that gets missed is it assures CONFORMITY even it that means a low bar.    One thing he did not talk about that I paused on an magnified was the condition of the oil ring separator. Besides a stuck ring a plugged separator and land drain back is huge when it comes control. We see in short order improvement in control IF that is the problem.    Another item I took exception to and he did not make plain was the condition of the timing chest and under valve cover having something to do with indicating piston cleanliness. Schaeffer's Oil makes that same omission in their million mile Ford video. I'm guessing he has never torn down a Red Line HP, AMSOIL SS motor that has been on that diet from the get. What he showed in the video was a good deal of varnish. Something totally absent in Peppers 165K cover off look. I smiled because he did his at the same milage.    He also makes the mistake of assuming oil temperatures in the pan are the temperature all over the motor even though he makes note of the piston being the hottest part of the engine. that baffled me a bit.    I can tell you from personal experience and witnessing teardowns of family motors that even oils of the 1960's would keep them squeaky clean when OCI's were 1500 to 2000 miles without exception. At 3K and above you get what he experienced and the longer you leave it the quicker to gets to the junkyard.    I think his is missing a opportunity not tearing it down again when he's done killing it. Time would be his only cost. 
    • Very often the part number on the trim part is just for the vendor order/assembly plant and will not show up in the parts system.  They won't make a bunch of extra parts that were not ordered. Keep in mind, lots of these parts were made to be "just in time" parts meaning they were dedicated to a vehicles ordered and sequenced for assembly.       Also, trim parts will often say, paint to match.
