2500hd...turn key and nothing (not battery)

I have an 05 2500 HD, 6 liter automatic. Went to start it yesterday, turned the key and......nothing. Immeadiatly assumed dead battery, so I tried jump starting (gauge in dash was registering 14 volts) with no luck. To be sure, I tried with a known good battery with the same result.

So, basically, I turn the key to 'on' and everything seems normal. When I turn the key to start, I get nothing...not even a click from the starter.

Thoughts?

Either a bad starter solenoid or a bad ignition switch. Connect a voltmeter to the starter solenoid and have someone turn the key to START. You should have battery voltage at the solenoid. If not, it's the iginition switch. If you do have battery voltage at the solenoid and no starter engaugement, then it's the starter solenoid.

Good call...had been wanting to check power at the starter but lacked a second set of hands. It's somewhat moot at this point, as this morning it started right up. This isn't the truck's first winter, though I wonder if maybe the starter solenoid was frozen or something?

I've seen starter solenoids that have 'dead spots' on them, you keep hitting the key and nothing, nothing, nothing, then click it connects.
