92 sierra problems

Hi all, I have been a long time watcher of this forum and have found many a time it has come in very useful!! But I have been having a problem lately which I cannot seem to figure out. I have a 92 extended cab sierra 4x4 with the 350 and 320,000 kms on the clock. Original motor and automatic transmission with no major troubles in the whole time. have had the truck since new and has been well taken care of, but just recently I have been noticing sometimes when I accelerate that it seems as if I loose all power to the rear wheels? and this is accompanied by an ungodly grinding noise. If I let off the gas things return to normal, Im really at a loss here as to what it may be so any help would be greatly appreciated.

as for the snap ring, that i am unsure of, and i just had the front and rear u joints replaced thinkin that was originally the problem... which it wasn't. I'm really at a loss here on what it could be. someone mentioned to me that it may be the torque converter, so what happens when one of those decide to kick the bucket?
