4x4 switch control failure

My 2001 Sierra 2500HD SL/E has button control of the 4wd operations - 2hi/4hi/4lo - and most of the time there are no lights up on it. Normally when I first start it the light showing which mode is selected will be showing, I get a "check 4wd" message as I travel and the light will go out or come on and off intermittently. At these times I can usually not change drive modes except if I push and hold the button for a few minutes - which is better than walking if you need 4wd.

I saw once, on a forum somewhere, that this was a common fault with an easy fix. Anyone know what the fix is? Parts are very difficult for me to get so way down here so if possible, I need a repair process. Thanks, Gordon

If the problem is the switch, I have heard that reheating the solder joints on the back of the switch will usually work. Apparently cold solder joints were an issue with them.

Thanks for that James, I've been away a while and so did not reply sooner. It sounds like a "doable" idea, I knew it was a quick and easy fix and that sounds right. I'll give it a try but have bigger problems to solve with the truck right now. cheers, Gordon
