Need some help on internet and blocking sites from the kids. Did some computer clean up and came across some porn web sites on the computer. Not sure what to look for as in software to install to stop sites that have explicit content. I set up what windows offers but it didn't work, or at least I was still able to view sites that are not child friendly.

 

Anyone out there have any info on what is a good program to install please let me know. I have run across Net Nanny but there are so many different versions and .net .com and so on I do not know what one is the real deal.

I've been using a product called 'CyberSitter' for many years. Works great for me.

I'm sure most of the internet filters work roughly the same.

Cybersitter allows you to use the windows login id's so that you can log in and not have the internet filtered, yet when your kids log in, filtering is enabled. It logs each day's events and will even email them to you. etc, etc, etc.

My anti virus software, Trend-Micro PC-cillian Internet security 2007, has some really detailed setting to control the content, that work really well.

 

It also has been by far the best AV software I have tried. Also it doesn't hog up as much ram as most of the other AV software's. Which is great for performance.

Hell yeah...You won't find any of them on my home network. Black Ice is okay, Zone Alarm is free...There are much better alternatives out there.

 

Ever tried uninstalling/deleting Norton? There's no option for it. It came preloaded on my laptop and it took me deleting it 3 times along with registry hacks and the sacrifice of 3 pug puppies before it quit re-downloading portions of itself and killing my network connection. I work on Servers for a living, so I'm no stranger to system utils....And I was 2 inches from taking my computer back to the store and ordering one with Linux on it.

 

The best security tool you can put on a computer is the one sitting in chair.

 

However...The question at hand is more about protecting the little ones from themselves online...Websense is the one that pops in my head as being one that can lock down all manner of stuff.

Thanks everyone for pointing me in the correct direction. We are trying our best to be good parents, way different from when we were kids and the only thing you had to worry about was getting poison ivy or getting hurt in the neighborhood playing football or what ever we got into. We all know the internet is a great learning tool but it can also be a dangerous tool for children.

It is good to see you guys are taking an active role in what your kids are doing online. I just watched the latest installment of Dateline's 'to catch a predator'...lot of bad stuff going on over the net.

I have a possible solution to the whole "my kids look at porn problem", it's unorthodox and I'm not totally sure it'll work, but I'll try it when I have kids and if it works I'll be a millionaire.

Quick question, how old are your kids. I am glad you are taking a active parenting position in this. I ask, beacuse if they are old enough to look at this(purposely), you could do the 'ol sit down and talk.. ie consequences if 'dad' finds this again. OR Like my kids, they are getting to that age, but the way these creeps go about advertising, like the crap on here. It can be easy for them to be fooled into clicking an ad to a porn site or such. Either way, a good program will stop this.

 

Then you have to worry about what happens when they are at their friends house.

True. I can't put these child predators totally at fault, even though they should start using the 'ol sparky' a bit more to permently solve the problem. My thing is I want to know about the kids, who actually are talking to these scums of the earth, and meeting up with them for real. Why are these kids doing it, and "exactly" where are the parents. Now that is a Dateline story I want to watch.

I have twin 10yr old girls. Getting to the age of exploration. We have had the talk and it seems to be working. Dad's (ME) keeping an eye out in the background undetected for now.
