Check Engine Light Question

Okay this is going to be a very blanket question so here it goes...

Went out tonight and everything was fine. Upon leaving the store I was at the Check Engine Light stayed on.

I turned it off and made sure the gas cap was on tight and got back in and drove to the gas station and put some gas in making sure the lid was on tight again. Light still stays on and the truck drives fine still. Any Ideas? I'll hit up Autozone tomorrow and will try the disconnecting of my battery first.

2003, 1500, 4.8, 4x4, extended cab, 87,000 miles.

It could be any one of hundreds of things. You will know when you get the code #, that's the only way.

Okay took it to Autozone this morning... Got the P0442 (as I figured) so I bought a new gas cap while there. I asked if they would wipe the code, they said no but take it to a dealer to do that or disconnect my negative from my battery for 5 minutes. I disconnected it for 10 minutes and changed the cap but the light didn't even flicker!?! Stays on all the way through the crank. I'll be taking it to the dealer in the morning but if any other ideas pop-up I'm listening...

Okay took it to Autozone this morning... Got the P0442 (as I figured) so I bought a new gas cap while there. I asked if they would wipe the code, they said no but take it to a dealer to do that or disconnect my negative from my battery for 5 minutes. I disconnected it for 10 minutes and changed the cap but the light didn't even flicker!?! Stays on all the way through the crank. I'll be taking it to the dealer in the morning but if any other ideas pop-up I'm listening...

It's your purge solenoid. Serch my posts and you will find a ton of info on it.

I'll have to look into that, if my light comes on again I'll swap that part. If I take it in for warranty work it will cost me $100 for the deductable so $20 is no problem.

This morning I went to my dealer and they cleared the code (for free). I explained what I did this weekend and I also asked about the disconnecting of the battery if that would help clear codes and I was told no that it would not clear the codes.

That is correct disconnecting the battery won't clear codes.
