Running On Empty

Man, and I thought I was bad. When I first got my truck I didn't realize that the 'low fuel' light came on when it was really low, so I ignored it for about 15-20 miles (I guess that's not a good idea when you're only getting about 13-14 MPG anyway). When I did get gas it took 24.9 gallons. I almost vapor locked! Now I use the trip odometer, and when I see 300 show up I start looking for fuel.  :thumbs:

A lot of people, self included, overfil the tank as well, resulting in more than the tanks official capacity.

Don't forget!  In-tank fuel pumps are cooled by the fuel.  If you routinely run your tank that low, you will burn up your fuel pump. :thumbs:

My 2002 2500HD 2wd is getting a steady 9.5 mpg in the city not like the boasted 14 to 17 mpg. Is everyone else getting this kind of shitty gas mileage. I couldn't be more happier with the truck and the engine performance but the gas mileage sucks so far. I only have about 2500 miles on it so far please tell me that it is still breaking in and the mileage will go up.

Let me clear this up a bit I have 6.0 GAS engine w/ 4:10 rearend in my truck I knew the diesel would be getting better mileage than I am but 9 mpg seems way low

My dmax only gets 12.5-13.5 mpg. I drive like a normal person. I don't drive with eggshells under my pedal. I don't think ALL people are telling the truth. I bet they have "HUGE" fishing stories also.....

Wouldn't have anything to do with your 35" BFG's would it?  ;)

I get 17 easy with mixed city and highway driving. I just got back from my cabin on Sunday. It is about a 250 mile round trip, pulling a snowmobile trailer with two 650 Prairie atv's and about 600 lbs. worth of bear bait and supplies. This only took half a tank. I know it's not hauling all that much weight, but I was impressed with the mileage. Last time we went, we took my buddie's new FX4 F-150 and it took him almost the whole tank for that trip. We actually had to fill up on the way back. When I had my 5.3, I got about 15 mpg with the same load.

If you want to ride with me for a week I`ll show you that driving nice and easy the Duramax/Allison can get 19+ miles per gallon. (last two fillups 19.5 and 19.4)

And for the fishing stories! The largest fish I`ve caught in the last 10 years was probably 14-16" :)

Totally stock Duramax/Allison and I am getting 17-18 mpg in my daily/city driving and 20-21 mpg on the highway, empty.  I drive the posted limit on the expressway, but do have quite a few hard take-offs in my daily driving.  Mileage average has been creeping up a little from about 10K miles until now (26K miles).

BrokenBoots;

Almost caught ya this time!  :P

The 'low fuel' light came on when I had 325 on the odo, which I found strange because the previous tank had 360 showing and the light never came on. Got to the gas station with about 340 on the clock and it took 25.6 gallons! For a 26 gallon tank that's *way* too close for comfort. Lucky the truck is new and the tank hasn’t gotten junked up yet, otherwise I’d be changing the fuel filter about now.

Since I drive the same way, to the same place, 5 days a week (which makes me refuel twice a week) you'd think my mileage wouldn't vary, but by my calculations it seems my gas mileage differed by almost 2 mpg between those two tanks. And that 360 tank only took 24.7 gallons to fill. That's BS -- wonder why the mileage is so radically different...  :angry:
