2003 Z71 Right Front Hub Shot

Well was making my rounds for work today and noticed a grinding noise in the front end. I know it is time for brakes, but just to be safe I headed home for lunch. Jacked up the truck and spun the tires (by hand of course) to see where the noise was comming from. Nothing on the left, but a grinding on the right. Noticed a little wabble while it was spining, grabbed the tire and shook it left to right. Hub is loooooose! I am surprised the thing held on while I was barreling down the interstate to get home. Anyway dealer is going to fix it tomorrow, but the only good news I have is my extended warranty, which I thought had a 500 deduct, acutally only has a 100 deduct. Just thought I would post it since I have read so many others with the same problem. 61244 was the mileage when this one failed.

One question, what about the other one? Should I wait for it to go or try to get them to replace it with this one, or at least check to see if it is dry and on its way out too?

I've been nursing mine for the last 5,000 miles, but it's pretty much toast so I'll be changing it when I get back into town. If the left side isn't bad they will probably charge you an arm and leg to change it, if you want it swapped. If your that worried about it you can do it yourself, but the part is about $275 from your local parts store and not that hard to do. I have 110,000 on mine and not worried about the other side. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

$275.00??!?!?!? That is expensive, where are you buying your parts? I've found them for $158.00 ( BCA BEARINGS).

That's at the local auto zone, but I've been looking around on ebay and other sites but I'm kinda iffy on buying parts online.

Can you replace just the bearing or is it a whole hub assembly you have to replace? my 200 s10 you had to do the whole hub.

ITs the whole hub assembly. I payed $150 for a Timkin hub assembly here in MI. Its a very easy fix to do yourself.

Its a no brainer. $100 and you dont have to get your hands dirty. Doing it your self and paying more and getting dirty.

BTW You paid for the extended warrenty might as well get some of your money worth.

Yes, 100 Drop it off, pick it up Painless!

Do it myself.

Bring my wife to work so I can use her car to get the parts 1 hour

Buy some other goodies plus the parts at the parts store (I have a weekness for auto parts stores, home depot, Lowes, and wal mart)

Get the parts and go home and fix it 2 hours maybe 3

Spend prolly 200 to 300 at the parts store

Search for the one socket that I need that is not in the toolbox 1 hour

Get Pi$$ed and go spend another 100 at the parts store for another socket set (and probably something else cool that I see) that I will promise myself to keep all together

Loose half a days work

Get chewed out b/c I got more than just the parts I need, from the wife.

Spend another hour cleaning up to get to work.

Fun and exciting, but not worth it!!

Now if this would have happened on a Friday or a Saturday, that would have been a different story!!!!!!!

As for the other side, they said they would check it and include it in the warranty claim if it looked bad.

My left front is starting to go. I bought one on Ebay this morning for $100.00 shipped. There is a Genuine GM one listed for $176.00 shipping included. My truck has 105,000 miles and I drive a lot of rough highways and back roads. Not bad if you ask me. The right front seems to be fine.

My right front is going as well on my 04 Z71. I have heard a whirring/grinding noise coming from the right from for a month or so now.

It disappears when I turn right so I am pretty sure it a bearing. Mileage - 110,000 kms.

I am going in for front brakes in a few weeks so I will have them replace the bearing as well.
