I'm preparing to order a new Silverado with the Z71 package and I have several choices of tires in either 17" or 18". My question is, does anyone know which brand goes with which tire size? I've done a couple searches, but haven't been able to find this info. I'd prefer to not get stuck with Generals.

The Z-71's I looked at with 18" wheels were getting Bridgestone Dueler A/T (265/65/18). The Z-71 with 17" wheels that I ordered came with Goodyear Wrangler AT/S (265/70/17).

 

The dealer could not tell (would not promise) what tire would be used. I had the same concern because I've seen some NBS on Goodyear Wrangler ST. Had Wrangler ST's on my Jeep and flat-out told my dealer I would reject the truck if it came with ST's.

How about going to a large dealership and looking at which tires are on those trucks? as far as tire/ rim combos

Next time I buy a new truck, I'm telling the salesman which tires I want as a condition of sale. If you are spending $35,000.00 on a truck, I think it's worth it to them to put on the tires that are requested if it means getting the sale.

The Z-71's I looked at with 18" wheels were getting Bridgestone Dueler A/T (265/65/18). The Z-71 with 17" wheels that I ordered came with Goodyear Wrangler AT/S (265/70/17).

If you order the optional 18's like I did you get the Bridgestone Dueler A/T "RHS"s

I don't like the Bridgestones at all and can't wait to get them off,The only problem with that is that there are only two companies making the 18's in the size 265/65R18...Bridgestone and BFGoodrich,I wouldn't mind the BFG's at all but they are only available in a 10-ply (load range "E") and are over $200.00 a piece!! The "E" load range is overkill for a 1/2-ton truck,Goodyear does offer an LT275/65R18 load range "C" Wrangler AT/S so I might go with that if they don't come out with a 265/65R18 Wrangler soon.

All this could have avoided if I would have ordered the 17's but I love the looks of the 18's over the 17's.

 

You do not have a choice of what brand/type tires come on your truck,Its whatever GM puts on and whoever they have a contract with to provide tires at that time.

So unless you change them after its delivered to the dealer,Like I did on my '99 and '04,your stuck with whatever GM puts on.

I too work at a GM dealer,However I strongly disagree with you,My experience with Goodyears has been nothing but great,I've always been able to get 40-50,000 miles on them,I've never had a problem with them chopping on the edges or dryrotting.

On the '04 I just traded I immediately took the Bridgestones off as soon as the truck came in new and replaced them with Goodyear Wrangler AT/S's (LT265/70R17 "C") The truck had 29,300 miles on it when I traded it and the tires still have over half of the tread left.

I've gotten great mileage out of all the Wranglers I've had..TD's,RT/S's and AT/S's,Heck the '93 K1500 I had with the Wrangler TD's on it had 26,000 miles on it when I traded it and the guy who bought it ended up getting almost 60,000 miles out of them!

I wouldn't be too quick to rip on Goodyear either. It depends on the product. Had Eagle GA's on my '04 Impala that looked fine but I took them off at 62K miles because they were starting to get squirly in heavy rain and I wanted something better going into winter. All I did was rotate them every other oil change.

 

The Wrangler ST's on my diesel Liberty were absolutely worthless (no, dangerous) on wet roads, slid so bad that I ran it in 4WD in the rain. After three spin-out near collisions I replaced the ST's with Firestone Destination LE's (highly recommend them) and it drove like an entirely different vehicle. I also had a pair of the same type Bridgestone A/T's used on the Z-71 on the rear of my 2wd C1500 that were excellent in deep snow.

Agreed, just took off the Wrangler ST's that came OE on my Sierra. The ST's are CRAP, while I got good tread life from them they would spin easily on anything other than clean dry pavement. Running a set of Wrangler AT/S now and I am much happier, no traction issues and still have a quiet smooth ride. I also have a Buick LeSabre that I run GoodYear Assurance Triple tread tires on. Have nothing but praise for those as well, excellent traction in any weather condition, good tread life and smooth quiet ride. Big difference between the top shelf and bottom shelf at the GoodYear factory.

My Z71 came with 17" aluminum wheels, and they have the Dueler A/T's on them.....thank god! My last rig had the Goodyear SRA's on them, and I couldn't stand the d**n things. I saved my Toyo Open Country A/T's from the last rig, so I have a good set of backups if the Dueler's fail me.

Can't imagine that any tire is more dangerous than the General Ameritrac that came stock on my 04. The generic AT's I put on from discount tire where night and day better.

Thanks for all the input - great information. Looks like I'm safe from Generals, and that is what I was trying to avoid.

Not many Chevy dealers in Seoul. Hyundai, Kia, Samsung - Yes....Chevy - Nope.

    • Did you ever get this worked out? Mike is doing the two start thing now too. This is after a new camera back in December. 
    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal. 
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps. 
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
