Mobil 1 Worth $90?

Got a couple questions:

1. What is the oil change interval for Mobil 1 synthetic?

2. Is $90 too much to pay for an oil change?

I have been reading the many posts about wich synthetic oil is best and why. I have an 05 sierra that ticks and tocks like a clock even after warming up. In an attempt to get rid of it I decided to switch to synthetic Mobil 1. I had some warranty work that needed completed so I had the dealership change the oil while I was there. After they did their thing and washed the truck I received a bill for $90. I did not realize that Mobil 1 was that pricey. The tech that completed the work placed a sticker in the window remindimg me to return after 3000 miles. I would expect oil the price of gold to last longer than 3 months or 3000 miles.

I would do the oil changes yourself. The cadillac dealership also told me that if I were to supply the oil the cost would be about half. They mark the oil way up. All dealers will tell you 3,000 miles. Why did GM put in the OLM system? If you are using Mobil 1 I would go by the OLM and not be throwing away good oil that could have gone longer. That is my 2 cents.

If you call the GM information number they will tell you to use the OLM, even on Dino. I wouldn't run it all the way down on dino but with synthetic I usually change when it gets to 10%.

30-40 bucks for a full service synthetic oil change at Walmart.

I get mine done about every 4-5 thousand miles.

I've used Mobil 1 in my cars for about 15 years now and have never had an oil related failure.

What kills engines is overheat, not oil failure. Dino oils are absolutely awesome. If you spend the bucks on fancy oils and not on regular hose replacement, you will lose.

I have had many hard working trailer towing in the Phoenix heat engines apart. They were all perfect from a wear point of view. I have seen many times engines with close to 200000 miles on them with the factory cross hatch pattern still visible on the cylinder bores that were damaged by OVERHEAT. By the way, we always changed dino oil (30 wt) at 6000 mile intervals. Usually stuck oil rings because of loss of coolant. If the old rings were cleaned, they probably could be re installed. I never did that but I know I could have.

Spend the extra bucks on changing all hoses every two years or even less. You will set records on engine life.

Think about it. When have you ever seen a worn out engine? Really never. Modern oils are awesome! Vehicles are gotten rid of because we get tired of them, or the ash trays are full. My '00 silvy has 120000 miles on it and it is factory perfect. No oil consumption, full compression and starts with a touch. I tow my boat up hills and generally squeak the tires at least once a day.

Get real guys, there may be better places to spend the bucks than overpriced (designer) oils.

This assumes that we are talking about properly designed engines. There are a few crappy motors out there that self-destruct because the bearings are too small or the cam chains are inadequate or whatever but our Chevy engines are great.

I am not knocking synthetics but I do feel that they may be quite unnecessary and suck up dollars that might be better spent.

GM recently sent out a notice to all their dealers to not push oil changes at 3000 mi and to have the customer use the OLM. Ford has raised the oil change intervals to 6000mi.

BMW says 14000 mile oil changes. Even I think that is too long.

My BMW also has a sticker that recommends using Mobil 1.

The OLM will decide for you and i have been using it since 94 on all my vehicles and send a sample to be analyzed everytime and the reports come back with flying colors everytime. Some of my service truck have over 200K and in the summer get about 8500 mi on an oil change.

Mobil 1 is a great product. No doubt. But dino oils are also very very good. Man, I could not leave any oil in an engine for 14000 miles.

$90 :)

Thats crazy

6 qts less than $30, oil Filter $3-5, 1 hr of your time

The BMW and the Benz also carry 10 quarts, twice the oil, twice the change intervals.

I use LE oil in my truck, if you want to call it a designer oil, go ahead, however, you will not find it advertised commercially or by using network marketing. It is a professional oil used by race cars for its superior qualities, and after spending 13k on a new motor I am going to go the extra yard to protect my investment.

Don't EVER EVER EVER let the dealer supply the Mobil 1!! GM list on that chit is around $8.50 a quart! Wal-Mart sells it for half that. If you don't want to do it yourself and want it done at the dealer, buy the oil elsewhere and give it to them to use. I did that before I started doing it myself. Takes a lot less time (not to mention cheaper and more fun) to do it yourself if you can dispose of used oil without too much trouble.

Also, don't forget to grease the front end.

For $90 the oil change better include a blowjob...

Or just use Pennzoil Platimun and save some money. It's just as good, just don't cost as much. Infact I think Advance Auto has it on sale again 2 for 1. Why pay so much for Mobil 1, a group 3 oil, when you don't have to??
