Why do some silverado's have a cut out on the front bumper while others do not?

Both are VMAX LTZ trucks.....

I am going to make a complete shot in the dark guess. It appears that there is probably an aux cooler of some sort and the hole allows air to flow over the cooler. I am guessing the blue truck in the picture does not have that aux cooler.

The blue truck I would guess is also a pre-production model. The aux cooler would be my best guess too unless it's a running assebly line change of some kind.

THE BLUE TRUCK IS A ADVERTISING PIC AND THEY ARE USSUALLY HAND DRAWN.. :D ..sorry, iwas not yelling, just to lazy to retype.

Another VMAX LTZ with no bumper cut out.....I have seen a few in person....some have the cut out some don't ....The cooler makes sense, but all Vmax's should have coolers, NO?

I think I got it. The truck with the cut out in the front bumper probably has the snow plow prep package installed.

Taken from the GM online ordering guide:

Snow Plow Prep Package, includes 15-amp power for backup and roof emergency light, (KW1) 160-amp alternator,high-flow front bumper, forward lamp wiring harness, (TRW) Provision for cab roof mounted lamp/beacon, instrument panel jumper wiring harness for electric trailer brake controller, (K47) high-capacity air cleaner, (KNP) auxiliary external transmission oil cooler and (NZZ) Skid Plate Package

that could be.....

I though maybe the Full NHT MAX trailering trucks had it, while the "Max Engine" optioned trucks did not

Makes sense, but in the picture of the truck with the cut out in the bumper has a Texas license plate. I could be wrong, but I don't think it snows a whole lot in Texas.

As far as I know thats what it is,The "NHT" Max-Trailering Pkg. equipped trucks have it,The trucks with the 6-liter ordered as a seperate option (such as mine) do not.

BTW, my 02 2500HD has the cutout in the bumper and it also has the snow plow prep package. Im pretty sure thats exactly what it is. High flow front bumper from that package.

And why is this a "high flow bumper"? As opposed to what? A low flow bumper? It's a stupid bumper with a cutout. The other one is solid, so allows no air flow at all.

It seems stupid for GM to stock two separate bumpers instead of using ones with the cutout for all trucks. What if someone wants to add a high capacity transmission cooler to their truck? Do they need to buy a new bumper or do they just grab their hacksaw and cut a hole in the existing one? :shakehead:

But then didn't they do the same thing with the instrument cluster where only 2500 series came with the transmission temperature gauge? Even though all trucks had the sensors already wired in?

The airflow through the cutout goes to the same place as the grill airflow goes. It just supplements the airflow. It is not dedicated to any aux cooler.

Oh, and take a look at my truck in my sig. Notice it does have the cutout, yet it is a 6.0 (non-NHT) with 3.73's. But don't be confused, the other post (#11 above) is correct. NHT equipped trucks get it, non-NHT trucks do not. The only reason I got it is because my original one got damaged by a car wash and I had to have it replaced. They sent the NHT one by mistake, my gain. I understand that the 6.0 with the NHT has a 10,500 lb towing capacity, which would require more cooling than a 6.0 with 3.73's and only a 8500lb towing capacity, make sense? But I also agree that it would make more sense for GM to just use/make/stock one bumper.

I believe ALL HDs have the cutout bumper and I know for sure the 1/2 tons with 6.0 NHT max trailering pkg get it. Not sure about the snowplow prep pkg?
