Gas Gauge/sending Unit

I have a 2000 Sierra. At about 60K the gas gauge decided it only wanted to work about 50% of the time. For some reason I have decided to fix the problem 4 years after it began What took me so long I couldn't tell you.

 

I see on ebay that they sell the sending unit by itself for my truck. I called the GMC dealer closest to me and they told me that the sending unit and the fuel pump have to be replaced at the same time. A local shop also told me the same thing. So whats the deal? Can I replace the sending unit without replacing the costly fuel pump at the same time?

 

I know of 6 people where I work that all have 00/01 CHEVY/GMC trucks where the fuel gauge has malfunctioned between 30K and 80K. While this fact irritates me and most likely should have been a recall, this is the only problem that I have ever had with my truck!

The problem is more common than that. My wife's 2000 blazer has the same problem. No accurate reading between 1/8 to 7/8 of a tank. It started acting up at around 60k miles. We've been resetting the trip every time it gets filled up and using that as an indicator as to when to fill up again.

 

I have no intention of fixing it as I plan on getting rid of that POS soon. That thing has been nothing but problems from day 1.

While this fact irritates me and most likely should have been a recall, this is the only problem that I have ever had with my truck!

 

1. recalls are only for safety reasons.

 

2. you should consider yourself lucky that you bought such a reliable piece of machinery.

 

3. you should go ahead and change the fuel pump while you're in there as they tend to go out as well.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll take it! This truck has held up better than any vehicle I've ever had. If all GM products were like my truck, they would still be #1.
