Not Sure I'm Cut Out For A Gmc Truck

I just flat out hate the way my truck shifts into second gear. One time it's smooth, the next time it will snap your head off. After the shift it seems to stall for a second or two before the rpm's catch back up. Turn on the AC and I wonder at each takeoff if I will have to stop and pick the transmission up when it shifts into second. Warranty is up next week so I had the dealers transmission guy drive it a couple days ago and he said it was fine and that is the way they all shift. If I was designing something like that and that's the best I could do, I'd quit. If all GMC trucks shift like this, I feel for you guys. One bright spot is that I will have my 17 year old Toyota fixed in a day or two and then the GM will be leaving asap.

Disconnect your battery and leave it disconnected overnight.

This procedure will totally clear and reset all shift-adapts in your PCM.

When you re-connect the battery and drive it in the morning, it will shift just like it left the factory.

Then, if you are STILL not satisfied, do a TPS voltage sweep.

your dealer transmission guy is wrong, How many miles on it? Maybe you need to get the transmission serviced too with a filter change.

I test drove a GMC a month or two ago. It shifted smoother than any other vehicle I have driven. Alot smoother than a dodge, or ford. Toyota is about the same. Only one that is a bit firmer is the tundra's.

I find my transmission to be quite smooth in comparison to say Dodge Cummins 4 speed auto, which was very clunky and harsh shifting on a new truck.

Yeah, the cummins eats through trannies like vette does tires.

So instead of trying to even bother maybe unpluging your battery to let the pcm relearn your shift points your going to blast gm for it being broken which it is not, then in the same sentence say your going to the shop to pickup your broken toyota and dump your gm product all togather. Yup you sound like the typical brain dead toyota fanbois, just like the ones saying how they are not upset that their brand new 40+ thousand dollar tundra is now a oversized paperweight because 5,000 miles into owning it the motor blew to pieces and then in their next post's blast all american made trucks for problems like i-shafts or tailgate cables, freakin joke imo!

So why do you wait til the warranty is running out before having it checked? If you bought new, you been living with the aggravation for 3 years? :)

I wouldn't describe my 1-2 shift as harsh. 1-2 is definitely is a bit harder of a shift than 2-3 or 3-4, but still smoother than most trucks I have driven. Unless you're grossly exaggerating your's does not sound normal. Try a different dealership before you give up on the truck. If it really shifts that hard then they should be willing to look at it under warranty.

BTW my Dad had a Toyota 4-Runner which shifted much harsher, the ride was no where near as smooth, and those seats were so freekin' uncomfortable compared to my Sierra. He traded in his toyota for a Chevy after he drove in mine. If you're looking for a smooth ride I doubt you would find that in a Toyota pick-up. On the plus side it was a very reliable truck.

Thanks for the info on unhooking the battery. It seems to have helped with the shifting. Though, after hooking it back up this morning, the AC would not work at all. After driving it across town to mow my moms yard I stopped and turned the truck off and back on and still no AC. Tried it again and it worked. Guess it was slow remembering what was going on. Anyway, thanks for the info. Guess it's like the PC's that run the robots at work being as they too need rebooted occasionally.
