What Size Are The Rear Drums?

My 06 Sierra has the enlarged 13 in front rotors and 17 wheels. My drums are making all sorts of noises and im sick of dealing with the dealership. All i want to do is replace the drum itself.

 

What size are they and where can i purchase a replacement?

 

I tried looking on Gmpartsdirect and cant find anything.

I would not be too quick to replace any drum components. I would suggest you clean and adjust the rear brakes first.

 

Remove the wheels and drums, and then clean all the accumulated brake dust off the rear shoes and inside the brake drum itself.

 

Take it for a ride. Should fix your complaint.

 

If you still feel like you want to replace the drums, I did some checking and came up with this spec.

The maximum INNER diameter of the rear drum is 11.673 inches.

 

So...possibly a 12-inch drum?? You may have to talk to GM-parts department on this one.

Well about 4k mile ago they turned my rotors (which was stupid of me i should have just asked them to replace them) but when they called to get approval to turn my rotors they said its best to do the drums at the same time. Me figuring the drums were fine they wouldnt mess with them that much. Well since day one when i picked it up my driver side drum makes like a creaking spring kind of noise and sounds like its getting hung up on a spot. It only does it in drive and not in reverse. Its like it will hit this spot and it sounds like a spring is pulling then theres a small pop. Once the brakes heat up the sound subsides a little but you can hear it every once in a while.

 

I asked the dealer to take a look at it and they said since they accidently charged my brake job last time to warranty then i would have to pay for them to do anything. Not knowing whats wrong with the drum makes me kinda leary of sending them in there and paying for some bs labor charge or i dont want them to call back and say "we can fix it by turning them again". I dont want them to turn my effin brakes. Turning/machining does nothing but make brakes worse and prolong the innevitable. I want NEW brakes but they wont give me NEW brakes and it looks like if i want them ill have to do it myself.

 

Iv done some research on drum operation and components, i feel like i can do the job myself. Hell i fix billion dollar airplanes for a living and put an aftermarket turbo in a Grand Prix. Whats some springs and levers? I just get extremely tired of dealing with people especially service techs who get paid a decent some of money but dont have a f**king clue. I just think the only way i can do this the cheapest route is to do it myself. I can go in there and tell the dealer to give me new brakes but im going to pay my first born to have it done.

I noticed a groove in my right size rotor and the truck has only 6k miles on it. I decided to ignore it rather then take it to a dealer. Turning the rotor which is marginal will only make it worse. When time comes to replace the pads, I will replace both rotors as well with better quality aftermarket slotted rotors and carbon brake pads.

 

About your drums: It is possible that they turned your drums but did not mount them properly in the lathe and they are not concentric anymore. I would check for that possibility.

Sounds more like the return springs and/or shoe mounts/anchors are not assembled correctly. I would not waste the money on machining these brake parts. If you think the rotors or drums are not machined correctly, throw them in the scrap iron bin and start over with new. Brake assembly is not rocket science, you should not have problems doing this work with basic tools and some mechanical aptitude.

Entertain this idea and report back: Take the drums off, then release the horse-shoe spring that holds tension on the brake shoes.

 

Clean off the backing plate where the shoes rest up against (contact points). Take a small dab of Anti-Sieze compund, and apply the dab to the backing plate areas. Reassemble and drive it---I betcha that takes care of it.
