Gettin Hitched

Hey I have a dumb question - I have a 2001 1500 Ext. Cab short bed 4.8 and I wnat to get a hitch but I can never remeber what can tow, and I always get the classes messed up. Any help?

Okay I found the info 6000lbs. Now what is a good hitch to get? What is the differance between an OEM and say a reese or drawtite?

I'd just get the factory one...I think you can probably have the dealer install one for $100-$150 or so. You have to remember though...If you're going to tow much, especially 6000 lbs, you really need to put a transmission cooler on there.

You can do a class IV with equalizing bars, and as wingnut says....make sure you have a tranny cooler....good luck.

OEM is a guaranteed fit - and there'll be lots in the junkyards from that year for fairly cheap (think the one I got for the Jeep was like $75 pulled.)

 

drawtite and other major brands are jsut as good IMHO.

 

stick with a 2" receiver and you should be able to hook up with 95% of what's out there.

 

as far as good or not, I'd ahve to say (and this is just a opinion - no real facts here) that OEM will fit easiest, and be duly rated for it's capacity, a major brand aftermarket unit (drawtite) will be very strong and fairly easy ton install, but I'd likely stay away from a no-name $100 parts store cheapie. But that's just my way of thinking. likely they could all be almost identical, just labeled different
