Gm Windshields Suck!?!?

pull onto I-10 this morning, doing about 65 when i hear the distinct sound of a rock hitting the windshield. wasn't too loud.. glanced around but didn't see any mark, no big deal. travel 2-3 mins down the road & i finally see it.. about 1/4" line crack w/ tiny dot in the middle. i'm pissed (new truck and all) but that's life. i'll have to get it fixed when i get back in town.

continue down the road few more mins.. crack is now about 2 inches & growing.. few more miles & d**n thing is almost a foot long! i slow down, kill radio & a/c to reduce the vibration/pressure & immediately head back to town. by the time i get home, this freakin crack is almost 3 feet long & smack in my field of view!!!! grrrrr!

-has anyone else been disappointed by lack of durability from their GM glass???

 

in the last 5 years, i've owned a brand new Honda, Toyota, Chevrolet & now GMC- both the foreigns took a ton of hits & never even a mark. my 03 silverado and now 07 sierra both failed miserably after one hit! :withstupid:

 

gonna cost me 50 for new glass, 20 for inspection, 25 to re-tint and a few ours of my time... wonder if the GM warranty covers this..? hahaha

 

in closing, this thread might prove to be pointless, but eh, i felt like venting!!! :cool:

Do you honestly think GMs glass is "inferior"? Do you think GM even makes glass? OEM glass has to meet certain criteria, especially in modern vehicles where the windshield is actually a structural member. I would chalk it up to coincidence and bad luck. GM's glass is just as "good" as any other glass in other brand vehicles.

I don't think GM makes it a point to contract out to companies that make cheap glass. I do think they look for the most inexpensive glass that just meets government or industry standards. It's all about the bottom line and for the record, I must have the exact same coincidence and bad luck as the OP because mine is pockmarked and cracked like a mo' fo' and I don't do much highway driving.

He's not attacking GM he's just venting. I had a Jeep that took a direct hit a week after I bought it with less than 100 miles on odo. Right in the middle of driver side. I was not the most happy person that day. Fixed and a week later-ANOTHER D@MN ROCK!!! It's no ones fault but it still pisses you off.

I seem to have the same problem. Cracked the windshield in my truck 3 times in a year then a 4th time a year after that, Im still on that windshield its been going strong for a while now. Cracked another in a new chevy van, new volkswagon beetle, new sierra, and new malibu :withstupid: bad luck i suppose. But Im doing good right now havent cracked one in a couple years now. Bad luck, wrong place at the wrong time, karma, whatever you wanna call it, I think I fall under one of those categories when it comes to windshields.

Of course you can always try to avoid construction areas and stay away from gravel trains...That tends to help keep rock chips at bay. Of course, I'm convinced all new glass is pretty crappy, since I've gotten cracks and pockmarks in all kinds of windshields, but my old '68 Firebird has taken some pretty good-sized rocks to the glass and still doesn't have a mark on it...Old school stuff rocks.

Windshields just don't last anymore. My last 2 windshields were replaced because of pits in the glass. Visibility was reduced but you never notice the gradual impairment of it until you get a replacement. My 93 headlights were hazy too. I cleaned the lights and new windshield installed on the 93 and it was amazing how much better visibility I had driving into the sun and of course at night. Of course I did live in Denver Colorado from 1993 to 2005, and the roads have a ton of debris all winter long. I retired to Texas and the 03's windshield was replaced when I got here because of the pits and hazing of the glass. Out of pocket costs are about $180 at Safelite here in Arlington and Denver. just my 2 cents.

I lived in Phoenix for a couple of years and there you have to budget for a new windshield every few months. Not only that but headlight/foglight lenses don't last more than a few months before they get cracked too. Must be a lot of debris on those roads because windshield repair/replacement shops do great business in Phoenix. Now that I moved to a "mid-sized" town in NC no more rock strikes (knock on wood :withstupid: )

Here in Manitoba anything to do with the windshield is insured, so for me its at most 200 bucks to get the windshield replaced, or getting chips filled is free too.

That's why I carry "Full glass coverage" on insurance. Zero to have it replaced. In Phoenix its an everyday thing.

New windshields are a rock magnet.

You guys' glass must suck...Got my windshield replaced in January (Third owner since September 06) and haven't had any cracks, chips or significant imperfections on or in the glass. I would have thought that hot Louisiana weather and cold A/C would surely increase the chances of getting a crack. Or all of these big rigs with dirt and rock in the dump beds (not tail gating at all btw) would do throw rocks at the windshield. But, I guess it's just more luck than anything else.

yeah, i know it's just bad luck, but wanted to make sure there wasn't a foreign versus domestic glass quality issue that i wasn't aware of.

now my decision is whether to get the exact GM glass or aftermerket as a replacement. probably no difference, but GM glass is 0 for 2 with me so far! ha

Can't wait to change out the stock glass in mine. I have 3 stars in it and it's from I-10 here in Lafayette as well. Slightest knock on the glass stars it. I've always had better luck with the replacement windshields I have installed in my other GM's. I may go ahead and bust this one so Allstate will change it.

      You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.

      New to diesel trucks. I happened to find my oil cooler leaking oil externally with only 4,000 miles on the truck. I didn’t realize this was an issue until I started researching it. Dealer is going to replace it under warranty but I’m wondering if there’s anything GM is working on to fix this issue. I’ve heard the oil filter used is the same as they use on their V6 motors and that’s what is causing the problems. Should I switch to a bigger filter or keep using the OEM recommended?

      So, GMCustomerService:  Judging by the Update History pictured above, is this truck missing any updates that it actually needs. If it's just for the infotainment system, the radio is working fine and no trouble with SeriusXM. and Android Auto is working fine wirelessly with my phone. Some months ago, an update notice was sent to my truck. I approved the update and it finished saying that the update was successful, but it seems that whatever that update was, it didn't actually get installed - at least not if I'm to go by the Update History shown above.   So, again, are there any updates that this truck really should have? I've checked with my dealer but they're reluctant or commit to anything and if I want them to check, they require a $200.00 fee just to check it out and then I'd have to pay for the actual update(s).    Ignorance is bliss, and if none of the updates goes to fixing any mechanical discrepancies, I'll just leave things as is.
