Electronic Corrosion Control

I bought my truck from Flaherty's in Albert Lee about a month ago and when I brought it home I was looking it over some more and I found a little tan box right beside the fuse box. On the side it said Electronic corrosion control, and about 8 wires that ran to different places on the truck.

Anyone else hear of it or use it?

Imo, anything electronic cant prevent corrosion, even if it can, I dont buy into it. If its going to rust, its going to rust, the only thing I do to prevent rust is take care at points where substances lay (mud, salt, etc) and clean out all the nooks and crannies after every off road adventure, and after every snow road excursion. Thats my way of preventing rust, is washing it. But im sure there are people who actually have or use this electronic corrosion control, so wait for some feedback from them.

I work in the aviation industry, and I have never heard of anything like this either. If something like was around it be in our industry for sure. Or maybe it is used in some type of marine application.

Living on an island just about all the new car dealers have this installed on the vehicles being sold. Its sold thru the F&I office along with the mop and glow. A friend of mine use to install these for the dealer. Bottom line is that while good in principle not worth much in practicality. If its there I'd leave it alone but certainly not worth what the dealer wants for it as a dealer installed option.

When I got the truck, it was unplugged but it seams like it may have done something because the body doesn't have a single spot of rust on it, but the frame and everything else does... or maybe the previous owner just washed the body alot. Who knows?

Usually electronic corrosion control uses a metal that corrodes quicker then what it is protecting sacrificing it self .. Common in some marine applications

AKA "Sacrificial Anode". Used in marine apps, especially when a Stainless prop is installed.

When installed properly it works fabulously well in marine applications. Power boats use them to save drives and rudders, sailboats use them to save keels and spars. As mentioned, it runs a small current through panels/parts and changes the surface energy of the material. (Much like soap changes the surface tension of water) then a sacrificial anode is used as a termination and "absorbs" the corrosion to slow deterioration of the remaining surface area.

 

It is also used in commercial trucking applications. Most big rigs have a system like this incorporated to frame and engine components. It can be found on trailers (even some aluminum versions) to prolong their life. It is not a coincidence that they can run millions of miles through water/snow/ice being hit with rocks/sand/salt/magnesium chloride and not rust to dust.

I'm not familar with the GM system but using a low voltage charge to inhibit rust on bridges is common technology these days.

My brother-in-law had one on his '89 K2500 extended cab. Judging by the holes in the cab corners and rear fender lips, I wouldn't trust it. If you are likely to have corrosion problems, would find a Ziebart shop before trusting this technology.
