Fram Synwash Vs. K&n

I have used K&N air filters in my vehicles for many years without any problems. Mainly because they are reusable and not for any performance. I have read a few threads talking about the lack of filtration of K&N filters and the harm of over oiling the filter can damage the MAF.

 

Anybody try the new Fram Synwash. It it some type of synthetic paper filter that only needs to be washed and not oiled. What other washable air filters are you guys using that don't require oil?

I looked at a Fram Synwash in the store, and it is $40 like a K&N. Looks like it is just advertised as washable/reusable with no performance claims. I guess they want you to pay more now and claim the filter will last 20 or 30 washes. I stay with my K&N for now.

I wonder how long it takes to dry out before you can drive the vehicle again?

I have had a K&N in several trucks for tousands upon thousands of miles. Never one problem. I have my doubts about the MAF sensor being damaged by the oil. I mean I doubt anyone is going to put that much oil on the filter but who knows. I know that if the filter can stop dust down to like one million microns(i dont have their info, just playing), that oil shouldnt be a problem. I would be interested to know if anyone has ever damged the MAF.

Given Fram's choice to go as cheap as possible with their oil filters I'd say stick with the K&N since they'd do more damage their livelyhood if they ever had a quality control problem.

 

Like any other maintanence item however I bet we could turn this into a huge debate.

 

 

(my personal choice is to use purolator paper filter and replace it every other oil change)
