1997 2500 Transmission

hello, i am new to this site and enjoy reading it. i recently purchased a 1997 c2500 with a 4l80e transmission. it seems that when i accelerate hard, the transmision feels like it drops 2 gears and revs high. if i attempt to pass someone, i have to play with the throttle so that the truck just downshifts once. any suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome to the site. Well it's hard to say if there's a problem without more specific info. Which engine do you have and how high is it? If it's still pulling hard and doesn't go past the red line on the tachometer then it's normal operation. It is a four speed transmission set up for good fuel efficiency so if your crusing at a speed where you feel the need to pass someone chances are it's going from 4th into 2nd and winding out, this again is normal. Only if it drops to 2nd and is already out of steam and over revving will there be a problem. If the high RPM's and associated noise is a nuisance or overdoing it for a gentle pass try shifting the transmission by hand with the gear selector by placing it into 3rd ahead of time. This should give you more leway in throttle before it kicks down.

hey, thanks vernon, makes me feel better :) was wondering if someone had installed their own shift kit andmaybe monkeyed it up. i have the 5.7 motor, and it seems that the rpm's are awful high when it kicks down, i will check the tach tomorrow and see just how high. once again, thanks for the help.
