Help! Check Engine Light Came On - Now Only Have 4th Gear

Can anyone tell me what could cause my transmission to stay in 4th gear (when when starting off from a dead stop)? My check engine light came on while driving and that's when it happened. The motor runs perfectly.

 

I disconnected the battery for 2 hours to clear the code and get the check engine light off, then restarted the truck and it drove/shifted normally for about a block when the check engine light came back on again and once again it stays in 4th gear even from a standing start.

 

1997 Silverado Z71 5.7 Litre

the check engine light comes on for tranny codes as well. sounds like you may have a solenoid in your tranny stuck or something like that.

Yes, the code turned out to be a 3-2 solenoid problem.

 

Does anyone know which one it is so I can drop the tranny pan and replace it?

or if you want since your going to have to do that servo install why not get one of those Raptor shift kits....it comes with all the billet servos and some other cool shift kit stuff that i cant think of the name right now... Last time i priced it, it was only like 300 ......but that just me its like my little motto to my self about replacing things " if your going to replace it you mise well make it better "

Are you sure its not a "limp-home" mode?

 

Definately need to get that thing hooked up to a scanner.

Man...I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say you have a bad ignition switch in your steering column.

 

The ignition switch "powers-up" the trans, as well as a ton of other things on your truck.

 

I'd put a new switch in it instead of messing around with the transmission.

Fixed!

 

It actually was simply the 3-2 shift solenoid - I got a local shop to replace it along with a tranny fluid flush and filter for about $200 US.
