Got Into A Race W/impala Ss

Got caught looking the other night.....lol This dude behind me had a old body style impala ss like the 95-96 style and had his little dual exaust and some pillar gauges...and of course the nasty black tint..lol

we get going and before i know it im going on 100mph,-then 105, 110....whoops hypertech kicks in ...no more gas..lol this dude passes me like i was sitting still had to be doing about 130-140...

whats the cut off on those..i didnt think they run that high, i was too far in the race to bother with turning on the bottle and since my dumbass dont have a remote turn on switch i would have to pull that back seat up...arrrgg.

anyway what do you all think on that impala are they fast or maybe just an old cop car that had no govenor?

0-60 you probably should beat it. If you go over a 100 your toast they're geared tall and that's when they wake up.

They're really not that fast... you're just that slow.

But with the guages and stuff, and given how fast he ran by, it's likely they may not have just been for show. So, I wouldn't feel bad about it or anything.

I wouldn't be surprissed if it were an old cop car. I rarely see a junker true "SS". Plenty of PoPo wannabe's.

I've never seen a true Impala ss that wasn't well taken care of. On the other hand I've seen plenty of caprices that have been rebadged (still running black steel cop car rims....)

The impala ss is still pretty heavy though, not as heavy as your truck, but not nearly as advanced of an engine either. That being said I've seen moderately modified SSes pull a tire off the ground at launch (bit long for a full wheelie).

Unless you have speed rated tires, you're asking for a trip to the hospital or worse if you decide to go that fast, which is why the limit is there.

If it was a stock REAL SS it would walk you from the holeshot.

If it was modified in any way, it would dominate. Yes it is a heavy car but you need to remember that is also the LT1 engine in there and can be modified just like any trans am or camaro. 450 rwhp is very common for that engine, a mild trans build and a loose converter with some 3.73's or 4.10s out back, your looking at a EASY 12 second car.

There are a LOT of them out there that are MONSTERS. Easily modified and have a following that's perfectly willing to do it.

yup. But, stock they are slower than the truck on the low-mid end.

No there not, unless you own a Vmax or SS, and even then its neck and neck and the IMP usually wins. A stock LT1 SS Imp will walk your 5.3.....hands down

Matter of fact the NEW Imp, Monte SS as well ast the GP GXP will run away from our trucks, they go into the 13's with nothing more then a tune and DR's

According to dragtimes.com the impalas that hit low 13's have LT1-LT4 conversion, NX wet kit, pulleys, hot cam, flowmasters, MSD ignition, 3.73 posi, fast chip, trans-go shift kit and drag radials.

thats seems about right stock, the same numbers go to a RCSB 2wd silverado. So it is probably faster if the guys pickup was bigger than that.

Depends on whos driving too, theres a 96 SS on dragtimes that is stock with a dynomax mufflers and headers running 14.5 @93 mph

Those new impala SSes are showing 14.3 @101 mph stock at dragtimes.com!

If you go over to LS1tech.com and into the LS4 boards. A local friend of mine currently has the fastest LS4 Monte Carlo SS on the road right now. I believe his screen name is badls1ss, he also has a 2001 turbo camaro ss that turns about 700hp and is a daily driver. His monte has nothing more then his own custom HP tuners Tune, rockers, springs, and DR's and goes 13.1.

As far as your LT1 Imp numbers, ive SEEN them go 14 flat with DR's and Exhaust......
