265 Mt Vs 285 Atz

Im sick of the BFG Mud Terrains that are on my truck and am wanting to switch to 285 75 Mickey Thompson ATZ's. Im wondering how this is going to effect my mileage. The 265 BFG's weigh the same 51lbs as the 285 ATZ's so im not adding any more weight. The mud terrains have alot more rolling resistance than the ATZ's. Id say about 90% of my driving is freeway/highway. Im getting 17-18 on the freeway right now and am thinking that i might lose about 1 mpg if that.

 

What do you all think?

 

 

P.S. I have corrected for the 265's with the predator and will be changing it again for the 285's.

I just put Wrangler Silent Armor Pro Grades 285/75 16's on my...3/4 ton Yukon XL,.....Quiet tire, aggressive tire!

There's a 7.5% height difference between the 265's and the 285's and that will have an impact on your effective rear axle ratio as it compares to stock or what you have now.

If your packin' an 8.1 under the hood and 4;10 in the rear you'll barely notice the loss......anything else, and it will be noticable.

Exactly. You make a 3.73:1 drive like a 3.45:1 and a 4.10:1 drive like a 3.79:1. Based on going from 265's to 285's. Since your truck came with 245's..... the differenece is even greater (245-285 or 16.3% off stock). 3.73:1 stock is like 3.12:1 and 4.10's is like 3.43:1.

I know it will lower my gear ratio. Im just thinking that going from muds to a mild all terrain will improve rolling resistance and the new tires will weigh the same. I do almost all of my driving on the freeway and the lower gear ratio probably wont hurt me there, it might even help. I know im gunna take a hit on city mileage. If it drops my rpm by a couple hundred on the freeway ill be happy.

Seriously though, they have chunks missing all over the place, theyre getting very noisy, they suck in the sand, one of them took 6.5oz to balance and I think its getting ready to explode. They are only on it because the dealer i bought it from put them on when i got it used.

I agree the AT's are good tires. The mud terrains arent good good for what i do though and ive seen one too many MT's have separations. (Think im about to experience another one too)

Yes sir 5 yrs ago I put the BFG's ko's on my older Suburban,less than a month later my left front was missing one complete chunk of tread, and my rims were full of lead on both sides and the truck shook horribly between 65- 75!!! Nope no more BFG's for me.

 

PS That truck never saw anything other than highway asphalt, no abusive driving either.

Hey guys, I'm a newbie. I had a 1997 Silverado and I put 2 sets of BFG Muds and the performance of that tire was awsome. Never did I get stuck. However, they were loud. Then switched to BFG AT and again awsome tire, not as loud. Did you happen to get a set of seconds?
