Gauges Not Right On 02 Silverado

Hi, I have an 02 Silverado 1500 and after filling up with gas this morning the gauges were displayed as if you just had the key in the ON position and not RUN. The truck was running and the gauges came back and put it in drive and it shifted d**n hard. Then I went up the road about 1500 feet and shut the truck off, waited a few seconds and started it and it seemed to work ok. Then drove it home went to Advance Auto Parts where they scanned it and said "no codes stored". Then I left there and it did it again! So my Chevy dealer is right down the road and the whole time it did NOT shift. So right away I told them and they have no techs on Sat, so first thing Mon they are going to pull it in. I tried to start it 2 times to pull it where they wanted it, and the first time no gauges worked, shut it off and then gauges. I put it where they wanted it and took some stuff out and got a loaner. I think I know what they are going to say, "Ingnition Switch" again. It has been a year and a half and now I think I may be doing it again. The SES is not on, I was filling up and the nozzle kept pumping and gas went everywhere so I don't know if that has something to do with it or if it was just time for the PCM to get updated again with a new ignition switch installed or what, but it sure is frustrating. I would greatly appreciate any feedback on this as I am already dissapointed and what makes matters worse is that I am laid off and have no money to pay them. So I am in a d**n hard spot against a huge fricken rock on this one. Thanks, for the help.

Anyone have an idea? Also, it has been a year and a half,

do you think the ignition switch could be covered under

warranty yet or am I SOL:(?? I will appreciate any comments.

If the same happen a time ago- and it was the ign. switch, yeah that is the right a-sum-sation. Call the dealer and ask if you were to have a switch replaced what the warrenty would be and if it is tell them when they take it in

I talked to them on Sat, and they said there is only a year warranty

on the ignition switch. So I think I am SOL:(. I have to go in there

on Mon and see what happends I guess. Thanks for the feedback.

Hi all, it was the ignition switch again. I talked to the sales man I had

and asked if it could be covered under some warranty, as it has only been

a year and 3 months. He said come in tomorrow morning and we will all sit

down and discuss it. The service writer they had today was an ass and the

sales man I had said forget him and another guy whom is more understanding

will be in tomorrow. Being it is such a short time we may be able to chalk

it up to a bad part. The jerk they had today said that, (sourcastically might

I add), warranty states 12 months or 12,000 miles. I said I understand that

but an ignition switch is not an moving part, what does the 12,000 miles

have to do with it? (It has 21,000 on it since the last switch was put in.)He said smartassly again, warranty is warranty, there is nothing we can do. He said either pay the $300 to fix it or we charge you for the work done and put it together the way it sits. I just left and told the slaesman I have been dealing with on this I'll see you tomorrow. He said that is fine we'll meet with the other man and go from there. I wasn't in a very good mood when I left. Being that I am laid off for a little bit longer I have no money to pay for it. So I called my finacial institution just as a back-up incase if GM won't warranty it when they call tomorrow. Either way this is aggravating.

If you had the same repair done at the same place a little over a year ago I would sure go in and try to make some kind of cost saving deal with them... BUT... If you go in being an ass yourself you will only give them more reason to say no. Go in with a smile and see what they can do. If the service writer can't help, talk to the service manager...

An ignition switch should certainly last more than a year. Especially an OEM one.

Good luck.

I agree. I was civil with him but when he started being an ass I got a little testy.

But I was still calm just dissapointed. Then the salesman I had said come in

tomorrow at 10 am and we will discuss it with the other service writer. He

is very good at talking to GM on tis stuff, (I know him personally), and we'll

see what he can do. The salesman said that the one they had today was being

an ass all day. The salesman said we'll deal with it tomorrow.

Thanks Man!! I appreciate it! It has been a frustrating day today and I didn't need

his crap and it kind of got me alittle on edge. But I calmed down and the salesman

I was talking to was very understanding and said he didn't need to do that. He said

I told him to leave you alone and we are going to deal with it tomorrow. But instaed

he had to spout off and make me a little angry. I don't need attitude when I go there

I have my own attitude. If I wanted an argument I would go home and argue. HAHAHA.

Just kidding the woman and I get along pretty good. It has been tough the past 3 weeks

being laid off and all, it just pissed me off when this happend on Sat. No money and

a broken truck. Very frustrating. The week of the 24th will be my first full week, can't wait!

HAHAHA!! Do you think I stand a chance getting it covered or not??

Well, I met with the other service writer today and he said you are SOL:(. He said you

are 20,000 miles over the warranty and 4 months over. He said he can't do anything

not even a discount on labor or nothing. I think this dealer has just lost my business.

What can a guy expect when the truck I have was on the lot for 283 days. It should

have been a red flag but the price was right. Three ignition switches in 5 years is

pretty bad. I went back there and he said the truck is done and ready. The new

switch is in and you need to pay for it. I said you didn't even tell me you were going

to put it in! He said he was told to close it out, which means putting in the new switch.

I said can't you discount me a little because it has been not very long, he said no, there

is nothing I can do he said. It is what it is and I can't do anything. He said the total is

$290 and you can pay that before you get the truck back. So, at 1:00pm I have an

appointment with my financial institution for a loan because I am laid off from my job

yet. I guess I just got f**ked in the A$$ again on another bad vehicle experiance. I

have owned 4 trucks, 2 Fords, 1GMC and this Chevy Silverado, and not a one was a

good vehicle. I can't even trust this one to go 10 miles for the fear of the ignition switch

going out again. Chevy, Ford, Dodge, or GMC it don't matter, when it comes to vehicles

it seems like I am going to pick the crappiest one. Well, sorry to rant on but I am pissed

and there is nothing I can do but pay for it. AGAIN!

Sorry about your troubles, man. I've replaced a few of those ignition switches in my time. Like many parts of our newer trucks and cars its made of plastic and we all know that plastic doesn't hold up as long as metal components. The switch is a moving part and subject to wear over repeated uses. Did you say you had 21,000 miles since your last switch? Think about how many times that switch was engaged? Do you have alot of keys hanging on the ring with your truck keys which can add weight and wear to the switch? If so that may help to prevent future problems. Did you get a ride to use while

your truck was in the shop? Wow, how much did they charge for that? Good luck. . .

Well, it is fixed. Cost me $290, but its done. The man told me is what goes wrong is something in the wiring on the switch iteself. It is not the typical switch you would normally see. It is a complete wiring harness. You have to pull the steering wheel off and replace the whole deal. So being that it is elctrical harness I can see how the price adds up quickly. Just would be nice to get a little more life out of it, but like you said it is made of plastic and wires so it is bound to fail. I don't have any extra keys on my ring. Just 2 little key fobs and the remote for the doors. But I see what you are saying. But at least it is fixed and hopefully this one lasts a while anyway. Yeah, its not the typical ignition switch you see, it is a piece of work when you look at it. They gave me a loaner which was great, all I used it for was going to work 2 days and going to get groceries. Otherwise we used my fiances` car for anything long distance. All in all it was frustrating at first but now that it is done I have had a chance to cool down and just hope nothing else goes wrong any time soon. Just happy to have it back. Here is how I was told it works, you have the switch and on the switch itself it has a gear, there is a gear on the thing you put your key into is another gear and that turns on the gear on the switch. Pretty involved the way it looks, seems like the more goodies you have,(theft deterent and security items), the bigger the harness gets. Maybe I am wrong but it is pretty interesting. There is no fix to it. The gear on my switch is fine it is the electrical contacts inside is what went out. It throws a code and your trans run like crap. So when they replace the switch they reset the computer. Well, thats the deal, just happy its over I guess.

    • I find it amusing the OP doesn’t realize this threads heading includes several engines. He should have posted in the off topic section if he wanted a more narrow focus. I really appreciate and find amusing that he actually pointed out one of my many vehicles. The Odyssey. That happens to use 0-20 oil. I love pushing his buttons.
    • Maybe, but it seems he is the only one that has backed up data to prove what he is stating. I think he is doing this more because he enjoys it and wants to get the information out to us. He's got the knowledge and access to the proper equipment and having the funds doesn't hurt.  I would love to do what he is doing and would do it if and when I hit the Powerball.  I'm not a Tribologist by any means but love to learn what I can.   I would bet there would be doubting people out there if a completely independent lab with high quality work and highly respected in the automotive industry, put out information like this.  The world can't be pleased, one just has to take the information that they are given, do more of their own research to find actual lab data to back up what they are trying to figure/find out.  Most don't bother, they just want to believe what they first see.     I don't have the minimax but my 6.2 in my 2019 Silverado with 64k miles shows excellent UOA results with 0w-20 and for my own purposes 5w-20.  Since not much of a change using 5w. I liked the data sheet information on the SS 5w-20 and figured I would give it a try.  Still the same viscosity at 100℃.   In the end we all just do what makes us happy, life is too short to get upset over trivial social media.   On a side note, I do feel GM has dropped the ball and just cares about the bottom dollar and not quality anymore.  "Like a Rock" has been long gone.  Seems "Built Ford Tough" has as well.
    • Better than stock but that's like putting lipstick on a pig
    • Hello, my 3 month old Sierra Elevation wont recognize a trailer with electric brakes? All the lights work correctly, but no power to the brakes?   This is the factory installed brake controller. If you manually push the knob, the display shows the power % but does not light up like my 2022 silverado.   I have an appointment with the dealer, but was checking to see if anyone else has seen this issue.    Thanks,
    • Been using SS 0w-20 from new, but wanted to change to the 5w-20 because I liked the data on the data sheet, to me it seems like a little better product. But as you can see, not much difference. This is also with running a mix of 10 gallons E85 to a tank topped with 93. It isn't a flex fuel vehicle so any higher I get a CEL for running lean on both banks. Yes my mileage takes a hit. Instead of 20 mpg I normally get on trips I get 17mpg. This is also using EaO17 filter.  What is amazing is I have the AMSOIL cone filter on it since I have the GM Performance intake installed and that air filter has 44k miles on it.  I just take it out and shop vac it off once a year.  I use the upholstery tool on my shop vac.  Works well.
