Hey, how's it goin'? My white beast needs a new engine. How can I do this and stay within the margines of Cal smog laws? I would like to use some of my existing parts. Maybe crate? What about Vortek 5.7 with a rolling cam? Help? Almost winter and I need to pounce on it soon.. Thanks

if your looking for a crate, the best option would be a 350 HO IMO.

Another option is rebuilding your broken one, its usually a lot cheaper than a crate. and than you know it will meet emissions standards.

You can rebuild your current motor. As long as you keep the stock equipment (SMOG) you should be okay. CA will not force you to bring the truck up to current specs, but you will have to meet the requirments when the truck was built.

I had a 383 built for my truck and it meets all of the requirments for a 98, but it will not meet the requirments for 2007.

God, I like where I live, smog regulations is just a fairy tail.

I'd just rebuild man, make your current 350 into a 383 stroker and be done with it.

your TBI should be able to support 360hp, if you get that much out of it your laughin, thats about a 150 hp increase over stock.

A complete rebuild should cost no more than 3g or so, with the stroker kit (about 800 bucks). And thats using some good components and including machine work if necessary.

Mike, I always thought/read the 383 was a bolt in all state smog legal deal. Are your California experiences different?

Thats tough. I'd look at warranty between crate HO and rebuild. Either way I'd stay 5.7L. Gas prices aren't coming down anytime soon.
