How To: Get Rid Of Annoying Ignition "chime"

Does anyone know how to get rid of the annoying 'chime' on the 99-02 models? (The one that comes on when the door is open and the keys are in the ignition)

I know it is pretty easy on the 03-06 models. Just a simple wire pluck under the dash.

Thanks.

Got rid of my chime today on my 2000 sierra.

I located the "chimer," if you will, underneath the knee dash. I removed this dash, and then removed a black box with an assortment of wires coming out of it. Just a clip held it in. (easy to find...just leave it chiming when you are searching)

I then opened this black plastic box. Just four clips and it was open.

The "chimer" was easy to see now. Just a black plastic cylinder on a circuit board that sends out the terrifyingly loud noise.

I took an allen wrench and ripped out the aluminum foilish tweeter cone in the cylinder. No more sound.

Reassemble and your done.

REALLY easy, and it eliminates a really annoying problem.

the key chime and door chime can be annoying but the headlight alarm can be useful. some test light work can determine which prongs to cut out of the alarm.

I did the above mod, I just cut the wire instead of removing the terminal. That way it can be reconnected in the future if need be a whole lot easier. But, thanks for the tip.

The start up chime is usually the seat belt alarm...The usual fix for that is unplug the connector under the seat but that may also disable the airbags.

Probably the best solution is to just not leave the keys in the ignition with the door open! Seriously, I can't imagine when I've ever heard the chime that I noticed. Sorry for the worthless post but I can't take it anymore.

BTW, and this may not apply to all models, but you do realize you can switch between two different sound levels by holding the 6 button down on your radio correct?

What you don't understand is that I have a stereo system and the amplifier makes the chime loud and obnoxious. It really gets old, especially if I'm trying to talk on the phone.

Just flick the door catch to the closed position, remember to open it before you close the door though. That is where the sensor is.

Funny you should mention this. I just found this out yesterday on my 2003 Silverado.

I've only been driving this truck since it was new nearly 7 years ago.

I was once again trying to remember how to set the clock when it happend. I go through this every few months, I set the clock and then forget how I reset it the last time and anyway this time I was pressing on the #6 button and the DONG DONG got quieter. I thought to my self, what caused that? So I did it again and sure enough it raised the level back up by pressing on the 6 button again and holding it down. So I put it back to its low level and will probably forget how to do it again with in a couple of months. :dunno:
