[new Owner :)] Key Help!

Recommended Posts

Hello guys, just purchased a new Silverado Crew Cab Vortec Max fully loaded. This truck is great, but I can't seem to figure out this. I have a remote that I do not know what it is for. The dealer said it's for the tonneu cover or something. I have attached 2 pics of the keys and one of the truck at the dealership.

Sweet Truck!!! I have seen a remote like that that lights up and beeps when the battery is almost dead on your vehicle...looked really shafty... so it might have been a scam for some poor sucker, who knows! i dont see how that would have anything to do with the tonneu cover unless it goes up by itself or something like that...does it have any buttons on the other side or is that it...

no buttons or anything, just that lol. but the guy said that the tonneu cover has an alarm on it lol... ill take some pictures tomorrow when its daytime. i love this truck :), first wash tomorrow!!

If i were you i would go right back to the dealer and have the salesman show you all the non OEM equiptment like he should have at the time he handed over the keys.

Yep I agree,Thats why we don't add any kind of "Junk" like that to any of our vehicles we sell,Ask your salesman what in the world that thing does! And make him *show you* how it works.

Maybe it is a remote alarm receiver. If the alarm in the truck goes off, it may trigger the keyfob. I didn't know you could get such a thing as an option, but I have seen them aftermarket. Set your truck alarm off (roll down your window, set the alarm, and open the door from the inside) and see if it does anything. If not, maybe your cover does have an alarm. Try to arm the truck alarm and open the cover. I'm curious to know what you find out.

I bought it in Oregon, and I live in Canada B.C lol... 5 hour drive!

Guess your on your own. Buying out of your hometown isnt good. Support your own local business they will support you and in this case would help you. That dealer saw a quick deal without at service and you lost.

In Canada I still have the 160000 mile warranty. I'll check in with the dealer tomorrow to find out what it is after I try what Mattj said.

I think it has a battery in it and some circuitry to slowly drain said bettery. Once it gets low, the light comes on, then the battery dies...j/k. Some vehicles used to (and i think still do, esp. with push button start) come with a device built in to the key to send a signal to the ignition that told it that it was an original key, and someone was not trying to steal it. Just thinking out loud, but what if you leave the key in your house (or somewhere far away from the truck,) and try to start it, is this thing necessary for any possible signal it may be sending?

I do agree to support local economy. I do try.

But if the same new truck at dealer nearest is over $1,500.00 price difference, I find it difficult to purchase there. It is my money. I would much prefer to donate the difference to a charity than the pockets of a dealer's condo in Naples, Florida.

My mother in law has the same remote but its for her lo jack she installed on her silverado.

If she starts the truck without it, the company sends out automated calls to us telling us

someone moved her vehicle.
