I wish Toyota would finally stop getting a free pass - this should be named what it is: RECALL and a Huge one at that.

Toyota is really having problems with the simple things, tailgate welds, door panel welds, etc.

These are the instances that show a media bias. You won't find this on the major news networks, even though its a huge recall.

Just a litttle more of my blind hatred getting in the way

The media LOVES anything Jap or Euro. Nothing new there. They are in lock step with Hollywood.

If Europe does things so well why did they have to form a union and common currency to keep their countries from going bankrupt? What a bunch of sniveling socialists. As far as Japan goes, our own manufacturers gave them the key to the country years ago... now they are trying to get it back. It's about time!!!

I say Buy AMERICAN (if you can figure out what it is)

Tojo's are too good to be recalled.

This thing is huge think about it :

Aprox $2000 per fix times 600 thousand vans out there. Thats $1.2 billion to fix. Someone please tell me why the media isn't all over this?!?!?

Warranty enhancement... Not a recall...

I guess in technicalities its not a recall, since those are mandated by the government. Seems to me that Toyotas days are numbered, if they are producing these kind of products, with these kind of problems with pockets as deep as their are... Common, Gm has these problems and they run a much closer to the bottom line.

Toyotas solution is throw money at it, when doing that doesn't work, where will they be? GM is producing products just as well as Toyota, with a fraction of the money that Toyota, has. When the money is gone, GM will be right behind them to take back the number 1 spot. Lets face it GM is pretty good at staying competitve with no money. Toyota stays competitive by buying there way.

That's dancing around the reality of the situation no matter how they slice it.

I am sure high and mighty Toyota must remain politically correct to keep their image shiny. Symbolism over substance is the way of doing business these days. Warranty enhancement sounds much better than recall to the uneducated masses...

Sadly, we created this mess. We sure need to fix it.

Since the Tundras are built in Indiana and Texas, could the flaws be more the fault of UAW workers than Tojo?

The UAW has never succeeded in organizing a foreign assembly plant in the United States, to my knowledge. I heard a bunch of commotion a while ago about the UAW trying to ""Organize"" Toyota's Kentucky plant were Camry's are built. I think UAW workers can still work for them though.

That got me thinking what a bunch of hypocrites those guys are. Most or all union workers you talk to will praise America, American jobs, buy American ect. ect., and they want to unionize Toyota.

As MUCH as I would like to agree (since I am in South Texas or should I say North Mexico?) with the labor theory... I have to say that the engineering of the vehicle seems to be what is at fault here. The problems I have read about have nothing to do with production.

At least that is what I have seen in print.

Edit:Let me add that this is not a cut on the Mexican workers here. They are actually the hardest working, quality oriented guys around here. I just had a new home built a few years back and those guys did a phenomenal job. I just wanted to make that clear.

Because it was only a handful vans that this happened to. Not all of them. Not all of the spot welds are going bad. It's not like it's a design flaw. Just some robot or human had a few bad welds out of half a million vans. So if it was happening to all of them then yeah it would be a recall. But since it's just a fraction of a % of them they will fix them as they break.

    • Ok that confirms the extra quart theme they are still going with which must mean they have noted some initial use more so then some engines and probably the bigger factor in all of this probably isn't the engine so much as its the insane distance or OLM that lulls a lot of the driving public into driving their new vehicle off the lot and not even doing one short interval oil change because the manufacturer doesn't say different and if the dealer follows that logic as well. Selling the rarely needing to be serviced concept seems to go over well with the public that wants to get away with as little as possible for dollars spent on the vehicles maintenance and I bet there are 3.0 engines just like other vehicles out there that never have their oil checked by the owner which goes back to why they probably felt the need to add that extra quart to avoid a costly theme.    Speaking of cutting filters open, it was probably over two years ago now that a youtuber who buys vehicles to do longer term reviews and pulls a fifth wheel through the mountains of Colorado on summer trips and that becomes part of the testing. Anyway he had a GM HD with the 6.6 gas and a Ford 250 with the 7.3 gas at the same time and of no surprise the Ford had more power etc but somewhere along the way in the few thousand miles he put on the truck, he changed the oil and was seeing glitter and cut open the filter and yeah, things were not looking spectacular. The truck about that time or soon after seemed down on power compared to what it had been and then threw some engine code, I expect the cam/lifters were failing and so he brought the truck back to the dealer and made some deal to get out of it as he knew it would sit for months waiting on a new engine as they were so backlogged at the time. He kept the GM for some time after that using it exclusively until he sold it after buying his next vehicle to do a review on. Definitely the filter can tell a story when things are starting to go sideways, but it would be a sickening feeling to cut it open and be faced with an ugly mess like that and be running a magnet through the pleats and the oil on the dirty side of the filter and see all the fines sticking to the magnet.    The dealer may have some ideas based on experience as to where that coolant smell is coming from, I would imagine if they can't find it but its smelling they would put dye in it to they could give it a run cycle and use the black light to see where it pops up, if its a hose connection, water pump, rad or even a head gasket etc.
    • Good looking truck, suspensionmaxx looks like a solid option
    • Thanks for the info, im considering a leveling kit or 4" lift kit.
    • charm.li (website) has the vehicle-specific diagnostic procedure for that code, you can use to find what the cause of it is.
    • It’s at the point of amusement. I’m retired I have time. It’s fun seeing people try to convince me I’m using oil. I’m buying oil at the prescribed time. It gets drained and new goes in. Do I add in between, no. My oil doesn’t even get dirty in 5k miles. I don’t even see any drop on the stick. I check in the same place. All is well.
