I was thinking on doing my chrome in an anodized paint. Duplicolor makes a "smoke" color. My truck is black, so I'm thinking if it's done well, it could look pretty good.

Has anyone ever worked with this stuff before?

Done right it would look good for sure. The biggest problem would likely be getting it to adhere to your chrome. That and rattle can finishes are not known for lasting very long. I guess you could try it on a sample chrome part over the winter and see what happens. Not too much gamble that way.

Yeah... i wonder how long it will last?

Bought a can of "adhesion promoter" to help it stick (as recommended by duplicolor) to the chrome. I also bought a cheap-o door handle cover to use as a test subject.

I'm anxious to see how it'll look. This might be a stupid question, but will stainless steel look different than chrome? The cheap-o handles are stainless. Either way, it will still probably give me a relatively close reference point.

I don't think adhesion promoter has a chance of making it stick to the chrome. IMO,You'll need to sand it to create a surface that the paint can get its teeth into. It can be a pain on chrome steel like bumpers. Stainless is easier to rough up but I don't know how well it will stick. Newer paint formulas are pretty good even out of a rattle can and Duplicolor seems to have it down as well as anybody.

I think you are onto the right track with your test piece. Let us know how well it works out.

It's not the best stuff on the market for sure. If you do decide to try it anyway, sand the chrome with a 1000 grit paper or a Grey scrubbie. wash it with some isopropyl alcohol, than hit it with the adhesion promoter than spray it with several coats of paint trying for 25% coverage per coat. sand with 2000-4000 grit paper in between coats, higher grit progressively, than it should stick for a good while.

It is really hard to get it to adhere properly and look good at the same time, so take your time with it, It will probably take you a couple days to get it all done, and your best bet is to only do it if its a good temperature outside, above 70 is ideal.

:smash: so is the metalcast a bad product, or the "adhesion promoter?" Cuz if its a bad product and that much of a pain in the ass to do it, I'm just going to scrap the whole project.

The metal cast.

don't get me wrong...it looks great....but it takes so much time and effort, and even than it sometimes screws up.

I'd just hate to see you spend a bunch of money on this project only to end up with it wasted and unusable chrome too boot.
