2007 Silverado Nbs Steering Wheel Controls Installed And Working!

I went out on a limb and purchased a steering wheel with the radio controls on it and installed it tonight... it worked without any reprogramming of the PCM (like required on earlier model Silverados). It installed in about 30 minutes (since I had a hell of a time finding a small enough screw driver to help pop out the yellow connectors locking the airbag connectors in place).

 

I ordered part number 15917931 (black/black) steering wheel to replace my (black/silver) steering wheel. It says Ebony on the parts sites. I think black looks better than the silver and the black finished is a rubbery-plastic material instead of hard painted plastic... much nicer feel.

it is pretty much the same procedure (easier actually). Just remember to pull the yellow tabs out before trying to disconnect the airbag connectors (and I am not responsible if you set your airbag off ).

 

In the end, all you will need is the steering wheel (part number 15917931) and a steering wheel puller with the GM Puller legs. Total cost is approx $210 shipped for everything.

 

I then spent the next hour trying to get that damned PAC SWI-PS to program properly for my nav system... but finally got that working properly too... now I am extremely happy with the truck. I had really missed the steering wheel controls from my previous vehicle. Take a look at the original steering wheel picture and the new steering wheel installed picture.

You can get it at gmpartsdirect.com but I ordered from gmpartsdistributor.com since they were able to get it and ship it the next day (it is a special order item and gmpartsdirect can be very slow with special orders parts from my experience). Total time was about a week from order to delivery.

Yes, I picked up the puller legs from Napa $23.00 and the puller tool from Autozone $13.00.

you mentioned using a pac. do you have an aftermarket H.U.? if so did you not need a pac to make steering wheel controls work period? hope i am making myself clear...

You do not need the PAC adapter unless your stereo is aftermarket. For the original test, I put my factory stereo back in and installed the new steering wheel and tested it. I then pulled out the factory stereo and installed the PAC adapter and programmed it for the aftermarket unit both worked great.

How did you re-installed the air bag? Does it snaps into place after you connect the wires? That's the only part of the process the worries me. Also, are the connectors in the new steering wheel different than the old one?

If you go to gmpartsdirect.com and go into parts catalog, you can find it in there under steering wheels.

 

I just checked for you but it appears that Ebony is the only available color with the steering wheel controls right now. When I purchased my steering wheel, titanium was also an option... you could try contacting them to find out if it is available.

The airbag just snaps into place, very easy to do. You just push it in until you hear it click into place. The connectors are the same the in the old wheel with cruise control and the new one with cruise and stereo controls. The only difference between the wheels is that there are audio controls and an extra wire coming off the main connection going into the audio controls... but the main connector is the same type/size.

 

I will let someone else take care of the fog lights :-) since that will probably be very costly (replacing the bumper, and adding the fog lights). Too much for me to do. Does anyone know if the wiring harnesses are already there for the fog lights?

I usually have my hands full when I am going to lower the tailgate, and this thing really helps... I just pull the handle on the tailgate and let go, this device lowers the tailgate slowly and was well worth the $55.

I doubt that is all that would need to be done... I am guessing you would need to get the pcm reprogrammed and maybe even a special cruise control module. It might be worth a try though... The only reason I was willing to take the risk with the audio controls is that I found the green wire coming out of the steering column and figured if the pcm had to be reprogrammed, I would just tap directly into the green wire for the PAC adapter instead of using the factory harness which is what I ended up doing since no computer reprogram was needed.

I'm gonna have to look into this farther. I have the DIC upgrade (plug and play) you tried the radio control (plug and play) so it makes me think what else did GM leave that could be plug and play.

 

Did you pull the airbag to see the wires? I got to wonder if GM used the same computer in every truck and just added the buttons to make the features work.

 

My thinking is that since the throttle is already controlled by the PCM maybe it has CC function already in it and just needs the buttons to work.

 

How much would you charge to rent your old to see if it would work?
