Stock Tire

I got the stock General tires on my truck and I had the dealership do the tire rotation and they are telling me that these tires are down to 3/32" of tread depth remaining, I took my truck to my local tire shop and they said the same thing, that these suckers are pretty much bald, and that I would need replacing within 5,000 miles. My truck only has 21,225 miles on it. My first question is: did anyone else having the stock General tires bald out within 20,000 miles? and I am looking at the Goodyear Fortera TripleTred tires. would anyone recommend this tire or another? I am facing a thousand dollar bill to replace all four and I want to make sure it is money well spent.

I did not get that many miles. I went with Bridgestone revos. These tires are wareing good. They have the best traction of any tire I have ever had. One problem, they are noisy on the highway.

Mine don't have a whole lot of life left in them and I have less than 4100 miles. I'd say they have 3,000 miles left max before they're completely bald. You will likely see a huge improvement by switching to another tire--any other tire. In my opinion, these tires are dangerous and should never be put on a truck in the first place. They have almost no traction on dry pavement, let alone on wet pavement or snow. I DO NOT want to go into the winter with these still on my truck and will hopefully be buying a new set next week.

Mine states 265/70R17.

I guess different size for 4x4.

That is true to my knowledge, I obviously got the 2WD but will be switching to 265/70R17 since it is larger in the width.

Fortera Triple Tred are good tires, they have tons of good reviews on Tirerack. Also consider the Fortera Silent Armor. But if you have Ameritracs right now ANYTHING will be an improvment. I honestly almost got killed because of my Ameritracs in the rain.

To maintain the outer diameter and speedometer accuracy you might want to think about 265/65/17. I had terrable luck with my General Americraps and replaced them with 265/65/17 Goodyears.

And yes, 4X4s have 265/70/17s.

Regardless of the size you go with, spend a little time at tirerack.com and read the reviews before you buy more tires. As with any review page, you can throw out the "ALL 100% GREAT" and the "THESE TIRES SUCK" reviews sent in by wacko nuts and read in the middle. Their ratings graph is pretty informative too.

By the way, the General is rated about 30th (nearly the worst) and the Goodyear number one on their site.

My three week old Silverado came equipped with the Ameritac M+S P245/70R17 108S rubber. I've noticed rubber on the sidewalk from me leaving my driveway at nothing more than a crawl. It looks like they have soft rubber but just touching the pedal from a stop on dry pavement has slippage and squeal. Steering is not nimble and the truck feels wobbly on curves. The tires are rated for 44 lbs and they had about 35 in them when I picked the truck up at the dealer. I put 42 lbs in them and the truck feels somewhat more responsive but nothing compared to the excellent road feel that my old '97 Cheyenne C2500 Ext had.

That is my other complaint, everytime I bust a u-turn, people turn heads because these suckers are SINGING, and I mean it, it sounds like I am burning off, but all I am really doing is making a u turn. I will head over to tirerack.com to see which one suits my needs, I really appreciate the info.

Everyone I talk to hates Goodyear tires. They all unanimously say that Goodyears are terrible.

I'm looking to replace my 17" General Ameritracs with 20" Pirelli Scorpion ATR's or Bridgestone Duelers.

My buddy has a Classic 2007 Silverado EC Z71 and his came with Bridgestone Duelers, very good tire, just too aggressive tread for me (Never do any offroading) since I use my truck on the street most of the time.

I agree, that those factory tires suck.

Youre not looking for an All Terrain tire are you? I know a good bit about those.

My dads Michelin LTX M/S wear great, probably the best of any truck tire. 70,000 miles and still have sufficent tread. But the cost is a bit high.

I have the Pirelli Scorpion ATRs on mine and I love em. The Pirellis were rated highly when I bought them and I like the fact that they are all terrain rated but look like a sport tire. Pulling my boat out of the water I never spin a wheel. They have as much traction as my old truck did with the BFG All Terrains.

I also hear bad things about Goodyear but the Fortera seems to be getting rave reviews. It's possible I guess that one tire is better than the rest.
