Rough Country Leveling Kit Question

Recommended Posts

Posted

My company wants to buy my truck and I told them I had a leveling kit and so I'm supposed to put it on (insert thing about never "volunteer" for anything lol).

I tried it today. Some people said they put it in by just taking out the bottom bolts on the strut and loosening the sway bar.

When I tried that the upper A-arm hit the stop at the front and wouldn't come down far enough. So I figured I would do it like the instructions and seperate the upper ball joint. I loosened it up and never could get it to break free.

Any advice on how you did it? I didn't really want to use a fork - tried some persuation with a rubber mallet and then on to a hammer and a block of wood and no dice.

Thanks.

I used a prybar under the strut to compress it a little to insert the block and to help line up the holes for the bolts.

I thought about that too. I'm doing this myself so it's like need 5 hands :ughdance:

I could push the a-arm all the way down but it hit the top stop. I'm guessing I couldn't push down - hold the strut and operate a pry bar at the same time and get the holes lined up.

Looks like I might have to recruit someone who likes to hear bad language to help :flag:

Ok here is what I did by myself.

I loosened the sway bar bolt. Then removed the strut bolts and clips. Pushed down on the a-arms until they bottom out. Then I take the prybar and go under the middle of the strut and pry it up. Why I did that with one hand I inserted the block with my other hand. You don't have to get it all the way under, just enough so it stays under. They I took a rubber mallet and tapped it into place. Once I got it close to lined up I inserted one bolt through the top of one of the strut holes. They tapped the block to get the bolt to fall in its hole and then used the prybar to get the bolt lined up with the A-arm hole. Once you get one done the second one is easy. AND DON'T try to hammer in the bolt because you will wreck the threads. Give this a try. It worked for me twice.

I install the 1.5" kit and then the 2" kit with no problems in about an hour.

No. I did one from each way. I came through the bottom with the bolt that is by the cv shaft. Some people go from the bottom on both but I did what ever worked for me. I think it is easier to get the front bolt in through the top first and then but the back bolt through the bottom. And who is going to crawl under my truck to see it. And if they did then I would tell them to fix it!!!

Another trick that might work is to loosen the top three bolt too to allow the strut to move around more freely. I didn't do this but I was thinking about it when I was doing it.

I had some trouble too. What I did was put a 2x2 under the A-Arm and into the spring. Pullup on it until I heard the wood pop and crack (Ithought it was going to break). Then I tapped the side of the ball joint about 3 times. It broke free and I did a backwards roll acroos my driveway due to the pressure I was putting on the 2x2. Stood up, walked over a It was loose!

Now after the lift was on I had to do the opposite and push down until I could get the nut started. With the nut started the whole bolt started to turn. So I had my 11 year old daughter sit on the 2x2 (Pressure to keep it from turning) while I tightened the nut. Hope this helps!!!

Just dont forget to get it lined up as the front wheels will be towed in some, I could see mine towed in after the lift. Also the headlights will need to be adjusted down, I turned mine down 4 even turns on the screw, clockwise turns that put them where they were before the front lift. A lot of people forget this and blind oncoming traffic.

    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
    • Thanks for posting, I'm sure it will help someone
    • New to diesel trucks. I happened to find my oil cooler leaking oil externally with only 4,000 miles on the truck. I didn’t realize this was an issue until I started researching it. Dealer is going to replace it under warranty but I’m wondering if there’s anything GM is working on to fix this issue. I’ve heard the oil filter used is the same as they use on their V6 motors and that’s what is causing the problems. Should I switch to a bigger filter or keep using the OEM recommended?
    • So, GMCustomerService:  Judging by the Update History pictured above, is this truck missing any updates that it actually needs. If it's just for the infotainment system, the radio is working fine and no trouble with SeriusXM. and Android Auto is working fine wirelessly with my phone. Some months ago, an update notice was sent to my truck. I approved the update and it finished saying that the update was successful, but it seems that whatever that update was, it didn't actually get installed - at least not if I'm to go by the Update History shown above.   So, again, are there any updates that this truck really should have? I've checked with my dealer but they're reluctant or commit to anything and if I want them to check, they require a $200.00 fee just to check it out and then I'd have to pay for the actual update(s).    Ignorance is bliss, and if none of the updates goes to fixing any mechanical discrepancies, I'll just leave things as is.
